NDLEA's Major Drug Seizure in Lagos: Cocaine and Opioids Concealed in Shoe Soles and Clothes

In a significant operation, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) intercepted various quantities of cocaine and opioids, including tramadol, pentazocine injection, morphine sulphate, and ketamine injection. These illicit substances were cleverly concealed in shoe soles, clothes, and other items destined for the United States, United Kingdom, and Cyprus. This high-profile seizure underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the innovative methods employed by smugglers to evade detection.

Among the confiscated items was 250 grams of cocaine hidden in the soles of custom-made shoes destined for Cyprus. Additionally, over five kilograms of opioids intended for the US and UK were found concealed within clothes and household items. The NDLEA’s Directorate of Operations and General Investigations (DOGI) played a crucial role in uncovering these drugs, which were being shipped through various courier firms in Lagos. Furthermore, a consignment of 440 grams of “Loud,” a synthetic strain of cannabis originating from Canada, was also intercepted by operatives at a logistic company in Lagos.

NDLEA Intercepts Tramadol in Custard Containers; Raids in Multiple States

In another significant operation, NDLEA operatives in Edo State intercepted a vehicle marked Abuja GWA 273 DD at Ewu junction, Esan Central LGA, on July 10, 2024. Acting on credible intelligence, the officers searched the luggage of one of the occupants, Aminu Abdullahi, 32, and discovered custard containers filled with 3,000 pills of tramadol 225mg hidden in the custard powder. Abdullahi confessed that he had purchased the drugs in Onitsha, Anambra State, and was transporting them to Mararaba, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, for sale.

This interception is part of a broader crackdown on drug trafficking across various Nigerian states. The NDLEA’s vigilant efforts have led to the seizure of significant quantities of illicit drugs in Edo, Borno, Ogun, and Katsina. These operations highlight the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and preventing the proliferation of harmful substances within the country.

NDLEA Raids and Discoveries in Lagos’ VGC Lekki

In a continued effort to combat drug trafficking, NDLEA operatives uncovered a warehouse storing laughing gas in the Victoria Garden City (VGC) area of Lekki, Lagos. This discovery adds to the growing list of successful raids conducted by the agency in recent months. The warehouse was found to contain a substantial quantity of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, which is often abused for its euphoric effects.

The NDLEA’s proactive approach in intercepting drugs at various points of entry and distribution has significantly disrupted the operations of drug traffickers. The recent seizures and raids demonstrate the agency’s resolve to tackle the complex challenges posed by drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria. Through these ongoing efforts, the NDLEA aims to safeguard public health and security by preventing the spread of illicit substances within the country and beyond its borders.

Major Drug Seizures in Edo and Ogun States

In a significant operation on Thursday, 11th July, NDLEA operatives raided the Ohen forest in the Abudu area of Edo State, uncovering a substantial cache of cannabis. The operation led to the destruction of 5,429.751 kilograms of cannabis cultivated on 2.918 hectares of farmland. Four suspects were apprehended during the raid: Godday Ariye, 37; Friday Okafor, 59; Obinna Nwosu, 48; and Yusuf Adamu, 27. This successful raid is part of the NDLEA’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal drug cultivation and distribution networks.

Similarly, on Saturday, 13th July, NDLEA officers seized an additional 300 kilograms of cannabis at Uzzeba Obi camp in Owan West Local Government Area. This operation further underscores the agency’s commitment to eradicating the cultivation and distribution of illicit drugs within Edo State. These efforts are critical in addressing the broader issue of drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria.

Nationwide Drug Busts and Arrests

The NDLEA’s operations extended beyond Edo State, with significant drug seizures reported in Ogun and Borno States. On Tuesday, 9th July, operatives recovered 2,865 kilograms of cannabis at Afami Ibese, Ogun State. The suspected owner, Umar Ibese, remains at large, highlighting the ongoing challenges in apprehending key figures in drug trafficking networks. The same day, a joint operation by NDLEA operatives and the Nigerian Army in Konduga town, Borno State, led to the recovery of 2,455 kilograms of materials used in producing Akuskura, a new psychoactive substance.

In Katsina State, a notable arrest was made on Wednesday, 10th July, when NDLEA operatives apprehended Sabo Sule, 54, with 47 kilograms of cannabis in Katsina town. These operations demonstrate the NDLEA’s comprehensive approach to combating drug trafficking across various regions, addressing both supply and distribution channels.

Continuing the War Against Drug Abuse

The NDLEA’s efforts are not limited to drug seizures and arrests; they are also actively engaged in the War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitization campaign. Over the past week, NDLEA commands and formations across the country have conducted enlightenment lectures and activities in schools, worship centers, workplaces, and communities. These activities aim to educate the public about the dangers of drug abuse and the importance of a drug-free society.

In Lagos, on Monday, 8th July, operatives raided a warehouse in VGC, Lekki, recovering 148 cartons of non-medical nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, alongside other related items. A female suspect, Suliyat Abdulsalam, was arrested in connection with the seizure. These sensitization efforts, coupled with significant drug busts, highlight the NDLEA’s dual approach in tackling both the supply and demand sides of drug abuse.

Commendations and Ongoing Efforts

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), has commended the officers and men of the Edo, Borno, Ogun, Katsina, Lagos, and FCT commands, as well as those from the Directorate of General Investigations (DOGI), for their diligent work in drug supply reduction and WADA activities. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the current tempo of operations to continue making significant strides in the fight against drug abuse in Nigeria.

Brig. Gen. Marwa’s acknowledgment of the efforts underscores the dedication and hard work of NDLEA operatives across the country. Their ongoing commitment is crucial in addressing the multifaceted challenges of drug trafficking and abuse, ensuring the safety and well-being of communities nationwide.
