NDLEA Seizes Massive Codeine Shipment Worth N9.8 Billion

Barely three weeks after a major bust, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted another significant shipment of codeine syrup at the Onne Ports in Rivers State. This latest seizure involved seven containers carrying 1,229,400 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, valued at over N9.8 billion. The operation, which took place on July 18, 2024, was conducted by the NDLEA’s Maritime Special Operations Unit in collaboration with the Port Harcourt Ports Command and other security agencies, including the Customs Service.

The joint effort followed months of diligent tracking and credible intelligence, resulting in the identification and examination of the targeted containers. During the joint inspection, the containers were found to contain a total of 8,774 cartons of codeine syrup, weighing 184,410 kilograms. This seizure marks the fourth and final batch of consignments under surveillance by the NDLEA, significantly disrupting the financial operations of the drug cartels involved.

Detailed Breakdown of the Seized Shipments

The intercepted shipments originated from India, arriving via the Maersk Vigo Vessel. The first container, marked SEKU 6439421, contained 875 cartons of codeine syrup, equating to 175,000 bottles weighing 26,250 kilograms. Additionally, this container included 70 cartons of chili cutters and 55 cartons of hyregra tablets, collectively weighing 1,100 kilograms. The second container, CMAU 9410422, held 875 cartons of codeine syrup, with the same quantity and weight as the first, alongside 15 cartons of chili cutters and 60 cartons of hyregra tablets weighing 1,200 kilograms.

Another significant container, TLLU 7595503, carried 1,754 cartons of codeine syrup, totaling 179,400 bottles and weighing 26,910 kilograms. This intricate concealment of contraband among legal items like chili cutters and hyregra tablets illustrates the lengths to which smugglers go to evade detection. The combined efforts of the NDLEA and other security agencies in uncovering these hidden shipments demonstrate the critical importance of thorough inspections and intelligence-led operations.

Impact and Statements from NDLEA Leadership

NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), emphasized the impact of this operation on the financial capabilities of the drug cartels. “We’ve further degraded the cartels’ financial capacity and base,” Marwa stated, highlighting the significant blow dealt to the drug trafficking networks. This seizure follows a recent interception of 6,125 cartons of codeine syrup worth over N7.3 billion, showcasing the NDLEA’s ongoing commitment to combating drug trafficking.

The success of these operations is attributed to the coordinated efforts of various security agencies and the NDLEA’s unwavering dedication to tracking and intercepting illicit drug shipments. The agency’s strategic approach, involving close monitoring and collaboration, has proven effective in disrupting the supply chains of dangerous substances. As the NDLEA continues to enhance its capabilities, further victories in the fight against drug trafficking are anticipated, contributing to a safer and drug-free society.

Chairman Marwa Commends NDLEA Officers and Stakeholders

Chairman and Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), expressed his gratitude and admiration for the officers, men, and women who were instrumental in the operation. He highlighted their diligence, vigilance, and professionalism, which were crucial in tracking and intercepting the targeted containers. Marwa’s commendation extends to all formations of the Agency involved in the months-long effort to ensure the successful outcome of the operation.

Marwa also acknowledged the invaluable support from various stakeholders at the ports. He emphasized that their cooperation was vital in enabling the seamless execution of the operation. The collaborative effort between the NDLEA and these stakeholders demonstrates the importance of unity in combating drug trafficking and ensuring the security of the nation.

Operation Degrades Cartels’ Capacity and Financial Base

The successful seizure inflicted substantial financial losses on the drug cartels behind the shipments. According to Marwa, the operation has significantly degraded the cartels’ capacity to operate, delivering a severe blow to their financial resources. This disruption in their supply chain is expected to have long-term effects on their ability to conduct illegal activities.

Marwa reiterated the NDLEA’s commitment to maintaining the pressure on drug trafficking networks. He assured that the Agency would continue to work tirelessly to dismantle these criminal organizations and bring those involved to justice. The NDLEA’s relentless efforts in this regard are a testament to its dedication to safeguarding the health and security of the Nigerian populace.

The NDLEA’s recent operation underscores the Agency’s resolve and effectiveness in combating drug trafficking. With continued collaboration and support from stakeholders, the NDLEA is poised to achieve even greater success in its mission to eradicate the menace of illicit drugs from Nigerian society.
