In a significant move to combat the menace of substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) conducted a public destruction ceremony on Tuesday, 16th April 2024, in Badagry, Lagos. The event saw the destruction of a staggering 304,436 kilograms and 40,042 liters of illicit substances seized from various parts of Lagos and Ogun states. This action, spearheaded by the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), underscores the agency’s commitment to eradicating drug-related crimes in Nigeria.
Brig Gen Marwa emphasized the significance of public support for the ongoing efforts to curb substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking. He highlighted that the destruction of the seized drugs followed court orders and was a routine exercise conducted at the conclusion of related legal proceedings. The seized substances encompassed a variety of illicit drugs, including cocaine, heroin, cannabis, and tramadol, among others, demonstrating the extensive reach of the drug underworld within the region.
The confiscated drugs, weighing over 300,000 kilograms and comprising both solid and liquid forms, were seized by NDLEA operatives across different formations in Lagos and Ogun states from January 2022 till date. The sheer volume of the drug haul serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive nature of drug-related activities in the region. Brig Gen Marwa expressed gratitude to various stakeholders, including traditional rulers, security agencies, religious leaders, NGOs, and CSOs, whose support was instrumental in the success of the operation. He also acknowledged the collaboration of local and international partners, such as the American Drug Enforcement Administration (US-DEA), United Kingdom NCA, Border Force, and other agencies, in bolstering NDLEA’s efforts to combat drug trafficking.
Call for Enhanced Collaboration and Vigilance
Against the backdrop of the massive drug seizure and destruction, stakeholders, including Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and NDLEA Chairman Marwa, have called for increased collaboration and vigilance to tackle the drug menace effectively. Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated the state government’s commitment to supporting NDLEA’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of collective action in safeguarding communities against the devastating effects of drug abuse. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to law enforcement agencies promptly.
Chairman Marwa echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts from both government agencies and the public to address the root causes of drug abuse and trafficking. He underscored the role of community engagement and awareness programs in fostering a drug-free society. Additionally, he called for strengthened border control measures and enhanced cooperation with international partners to stem the influx of illicit drugs into the country.
The destruction of the seized drugs serves as a poignant reminder of the persistent challenges posed by drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria. However, with concerted efforts, proactive measures, and continued collaboration among stakeholders, there remains hope for mitigating the impact of illicit drugs and creating safer communities for all.
