In a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has apprehended three key members of an organized criminal network involved in the illicit drug trade spanning multiple countries. This operation comes on the heels of the seizure of the largest-ever consignment of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
The operation, which commenced on February 10, 2024, at the SAHCO Import Shed of the airport’s Cargo Terminal, yielded a staggering 51.90 kilograms of heroin concealed within metal cutting machines. This seizure underscores the sophistication of the drug cartel’s operations, with the illicit substance cleverly hidden within 15 cartons of machinery. Further investigation led to the discovery of additional heroin at the syndicate’s warehouse in Ayobo, Lagos, bringing the total haul to 51.90 kilograms. The Agency’s swift action not only prevented the distribution of these drugs within Nigeria but also thwarted their intended exportation to various international destinations.
In a commendable display of diligence, the NDLEA secured an interim forfeiture court order on assets linked to the syndicate, including hotels, mansions, vehicles, and funds. This demonstrates the Agency’s commitment to dismantling drug networks and depriving them of the financial resources fueling their criminal activities. Despite the syndicate’s attempt to evade capture, the recent arrests of two wanted kingpins, Onyinyechi Irene Igbokwuputa and Frankline Uzochukwu, in Lagos and Awka, Anambra state, respectively, as well as the apprehension of Osita Emmanuel Obinna in Lagos, signal a significant victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
Intercepted Drug Consignment Bound for Oman
In a separate but equally noteworthy development, NDLEA officers intercepted a drug consignment bound for Muscat, Oman, at Terminal 2 of the Lagos airport. The suspect, identified as Iheakara Ifeanyichukwu Festus, attempted to smuggle 9.80 kilograms of cannabis concealed within his luggage. Festus, who resides in Muscat and had returned to Nigeria on April 1, confessed to being hired as a courier with the promise of a substantial payment of N1,200,000 upon successful delivery in Oman. This interception underscores the NDLEA’s unwavering vigilance in preventing the international trafficking of narcotics and highlights the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies to combat transnational crime.
Ongoing Efforts and Future Prospects
These recent successes reflect the NDLEA’s intensified efforts to stem the tide of drug trafficking and abuse in Nigeria. By dismantling criminal networks, intercepting illicit consignments, and apprehending key operatives, the Agency continues to make significant strides in safeguarding communities from the scourge of narcotics. However, the fight against drug trafficking remains an ongoing challenge, requiring sustained vigilance, collaboration, and innovative strategies. As the NDLEA remains steadfast in its commitment to combatting drug-related crime, the recent arrests and seizures serve as a testament to the Agency’s resolve in ensuring a drug-free society for all Nigerians.
Major Drug Busts Across Multiple States by NDLEA
In a series of coordinated operations, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant seizures of narcotics across several states in Nigeria. Under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), the agency continues its relentless pursuit of drug traffickers and suppliers, aiming to curb the spread of illegal substances and protect communities from the scourge of drug abuse.
Adamawa State: Interception of Opioids Trafficking
In Adamawa state, NDLEA operatives intercepted a Peugeot car driven by Dahiru Mohammed on Saturday, 20th April, near Girei. The vehicle was bound for Mubi, carrying a staggering 1,250,000 pills of opioids, weighing 450kg. This interception underscores the agency’s vigilance in monitoring drug trafficking activities, preventing dangerous substances from reaching their destinations and potentially causing harm to countless individuals.
Additionally, along the Ngurore-Yola road, another interception occurred involving a J5 bus loaded with motor spare parts from Onitsha, Anambra State. Upon inspection, NDLEA agents discovered consignments of Codeine Syrup and Tramadol cleverly concealed among the motor parts. A subsequent operation led to the arrest of the recipient, Jairus Nwanchor, at Jambutu motor park. These efforts highlight the agency’s multi-pronged approach in tackling drug trafficking networks operating within the region.
Bayelsa State: Arrests and Seizure of Cannabis Blocks
In a separate incident, three suspects – Beriakuma Vivian Chinrdu, Okpor Isaac, and Daniel Onyeachom – were apprehended on Saturday, 20th April, at Amarata, Yenagoa, Bayelsa state. Their Toyota Picnic car, marked MUS 711 DH, concealed 69 compressed blocks of cannabis weighing 36kg. This discovery points to the intricate methods employed by drug traffickers to conceal illegal substances and evade law enforcement scrutiny.
Meanwhile, in Imo state, NDLEA operatives arrested Kingsley Omeje, 41, at Amajeke, Owerri, on Thursday, 18th April. Omeje was apprehended while taking delivery of 49 bottles of codeine syrup he had ordered. These arrests underscore the agency’s unwavering commitment to intercepting drug shipments and apprehending individuals involved in the illicit drug trade.
Ondo State: Raids and Destruction of Cannabis Farmland
In Ondo state, NDLEA operatives conducted a raid on the Oloro camp in Ogbese, Akure North LGA, resulting in the arrest of Linus Odogwu, 50. The operation also led to the destruction of 25,000 kilograms of cannabis cultivated on a 10-hectare farmland. Additionally, 89.5kg of the same substance were recovered during the operation. The arrests of three other suspects in different parts of the state further demonstrate the agency’s determination to dismantle drug trafficking networks and disrupt the supply chain of illicit substances.
Intensified Advocacy Efforts
Simultaneously, NDLEA commands across the country have intensified their War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) advocacy lectures. These initiatives include sensitization lectures to students and staff at various educational institutions, as well as outreach programs targeting traders and community members. By engaging in proactive awareness campaigns, the agency aims to address the root causes of drug abuse and promote a drug-free society.
Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), commended the officers and men of various commands for their tireless efforts in combating drug trafficking and abuse. He also lauded the intensified WADA advocacy lectures, emphasizing the importance of addressing both supply and demand aspects of the drug problem to achieve meaningful progress in the fight against substance abuse.
