After years of eluding law enforcement, Alhaji Sulaiman Jimoh, also known as Temo, the feared leader of the Mushin, Lagos drug cartel, has been captured by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). The 57-year-old, infamously nicknamed Olowoidiogede, had long been considered untouchable, maintaining his reign over one of Lagos’s most notorious drug networks. His arrest took place at his stronghold after he and his gang initially resisted, attempting to fend off the NDLEA operatives.
For the past two years, Temo had managed to stay one step ahead of the law, even as the NDLEA intercepted large consignments of illicit drugs worth billions of naira linked to him. Encounters between his armed gang and NDLEA operatives often resulted in violent gunfights, making his capture a significant victory for the agency. The persistence and advanced intelligence of the NDLEA finally paid off, culminating in Temo’s arrest at 10 am on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Igbarere Street in Mushin.
Seizures and Gunfights: The Downfall of Temo
Temo’s operations had been under intense scrutiny, with several major drug seizures tied to his cartel. On January 28, 2024, NDLEA operatives intercepted 14,524.8 kilograms of Ghana Loud, a potent strain of cannabis sativa, smuggled into Lagos from Ghana. This consignment was discovered in two trucks and a J5 bus at Ojuelegba, Lagos. Another significant seizure occurred on May 4, 2023, when two truckloads weighing 8,852 kilograms of the same substance were intercepted at Eleko Beach, Lekki. More recently, on July 26, 2023, 252 kilograms of Loud were seized from his Mushin enclave, following a fierce gunfight between his men and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency operatives.
These seizures highlighted Temo’s vast network and his relentless pursuit of drug trafficking despite the increasing pressure from law enforcement. His notorious reputation for evading capture made him a high-value target for the NDLEA, who utilized modern tools and intelligence to track his movements. The concerted effort to bring him to justice finally succeeded, marking a significant blow to the drug trade in Lagos.
The Capture and Aftermath
The decisive moment came when NDLEA surveillance teams, who had been trailing Temo, tracked him down at Igbarere Street, Mushin. As he attempted to flee in a Mercedes Benz SUV GLE 350, marked 01G-300G, reinforcements of about 50 operatives were immediately mobilized to the area. Temo’s attempt to escape was thwarted despite his efforts to mobilize hoodlums to engage and distract the operatives. Overpowered and unable to outgun the anti-narcotic agents, he was finally captured and whisked away from the chaotic scene, while his gang members surrendered to the superior firepower of the NDLEA.
The arrest of Temo marks a significant milestone in the NDLEA’s ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Nigeria. His capture is expected to disrupt the operations of the Mushin drug cartel significantly, sending a strong message to other drug lords about the agency’s resolve. The NDLEA’s successful operation demonstrates the power of persistence, modern intelligence, and tactical execution in combating organized crime.
NDLEA Chairman Commends Arrest Efforts
Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, has publicly praised the efforts of law enforcement personnel following the recent arrest of Temo, a notorious figure in the illicit drug trade. The operation, spearheaded by the Lagos State Command alongside the Special Monitoring Task Force and other dedicated units, demonstrated remarkable resilience, vigilance, and professionalism. Despite facing significant challenges during the operation, Marwa emphasized that the arrest was executed without casualties, highlighting the dedication and tactical acumen of NDLEA operatives.
Marwa expressed his satisfaction that the apprehension took place within his jurisdiction, underscoring the agency’s unwavering commitment to combating drug cartels across the nation. “This successful arrest sends a clear message to others involved in the criminal trade of illicit drugs,” Marwa asserted. He stressed the agency’s proximity to these criminal elements, warning that evasion tactics are futile in the face of NDLEA’s determined pursuit.
Call for Increased Vigilance and Enforcement
In a resolute call to action, Marwa urged NDLEA operatives to intensify efforts against drug cartels operating within Nigeria. Emphasizing the agency’s proximity to these criminal networks, he reaffirmed NDLEA’s resolve to dismantle illicit operations nationwide. “We are just steps away from their doorsteps,” Marwa declared, asserting that no corner would serve as a sanctuary for those engaged in illegal drug trafficking.
The NDLEA Chairman’s remarks underscored the agency’s proactive stance in combating drug-related crimes. With the arrest of Temo serving as a pivotal example, Marwa highlighted the importance of persistent vigilance and collaboration across NDLEA formations. As the agency continues its mission to safeguard communities from the scourge of illicit drugs, Marwa’s message resonates as a stern warning to all those involved in criminal drug activities.
