The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is set to inaugurate 92 infrastructure projects worth N84bn across the nine states in the Niger Delta region. The projects, which include roads, electrification projects, and social infrastructure, are aimed at improving the lives of residents in the region. According to the Director, Corporate Affairs, Pius Ughakpoteni, the projects demonstrate the commission’s commitment to developing the region.
The projects are spread across the nine states in the region, with each state benefiting from at least one project. The commission has partnered with other organizations, including the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), to execute some of the projects. The inauguration of the projects is expected to take place over the next two weeks.
NDDC: Ogbia-Nembe Road, A Game Changer for Bayelsa State
The 25.7km Ogbia-Nembe Road in Bayelsa State, executed at a cost of N24bn, is one of the projects set to be inaugurated by the NDDC. This road project has achieved a significant feat by reducing travel time to Yenagoa, the state capital, from a grueling three hours to a mere 45 minutes. This milestone has not only improved connectivity but also opened up 14 communities for development, paving the way for economic growth and social progress.
The project’s scope is impressive, featuring the construction of 9.15km of pre-fabricated vertical drains on the swamp and seven bridges. This infrastructure upgrade is expected to boost economic activities in the state, enhance the quality of life for residents, and create new opportunities for businesses and industries. By linking the ancient city of Nembe to the rest of the state for the first time in living memory, this road project has truly earned its place as a game changer for Bayelsa State.
NDDC: Electrification Project to Boost Power Supply in Ondo State
The NDDC has successfully executed a critical infrastructure project in Ondo State, investing N8.3bn in a 132KV Transmission Line and 132KV/33KV Substation electrification project. This initiative aims to optimize power supply to local government areas in the southern part of the state, providing a much-needed boost to the region’s economic prospects.
The project’s scope is extensive, featuring the construction of 45km double circuit 33KV feeder lines from Omotosho Power Station to Okitipupa, as well as two 30MVA, 132/33KV Injection Substations equipped with breakers, gantry, and substation automation. By improving power supply to communities in the southern part of the state, this project is poised to have a transformative impact on the region, driving economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
NDDC: Iko-Iwuochang Road, A Major Link for Akwa Ibom State
The NDDC has made a significant investment in Akwa Ibom State’s infrastructure, executing a 6.87km Iko-Iwuochang road project at a cost of N10bn. This critical project has resulted in a two-lane single carriage way, a 600-metre bridge, and side drains, significantly enhancing the state’s transportation network.
The impact of this project is far-reaching, having linked 20 communities previously separated by the Qua Iboe river. By bridging this physical divide, the road is expected to boost economic activities, improve transportation, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents in the state. This project is a testament to the NDDC’s commitment to driving development in the Niger Delta region.
NDDC: Obehie to Oke Ikpe-Road, A Vital Link Restored in Abia State
The NDDC has successfully reconstructed the Obehie to Oke Ikpe-road in Abia State, investing N3.5 billion in the project. This critical infrastructure initiative has restored a vital road link between Rivers and Akwa Ibom states, spanning nine kilometres through Abia State’s Ukwa East/West region.
The project’s scope was comprehensive, involving the reconstruction of seven kilometres of failed road section and the construction of three kilometres and eight kilometres of drainage. By restoring this key transportation artery, the road is expected to significantly improve transportation and economic activities in Abia State, driving growth and development in the region. This project demonstrates the NDDC’s commitment to enhancing the lives of residents in the Niger Delta region.
