NAFDAC's Bold Crackdown: Dismantling a Counterfeit Network in Aba's Eziukwu Market

In a decisive move to curb the production and sale of counterfeit beverages and consumables, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) intercepted a network of counterfeiters operating within Eziukwu Market, also known as Cemetery Market, in Aba, Abia State. This breakthrough came after weeks of meticulous intelligence gathering following a tip-off. The agency, in collaboration with other security forces, conducted a sting operation to dismantle the criminal operations in the market, which had been functioning as a hub for the production and distribution of illicit goods.

Unveiling a Sophisticated Criminal Network

The intercepted counterfeiters engaged in a range of illicit activities, notably the production of a wide array of counterfeit beverages, encompassing popular brands such as Seaman Schnapps, Hennessey, Four Cousins, Carlo Rossi, and more. Shockingly, the criminals also tampered with expiration dates on products like Peak milk, powdered milk, ketchup, and yoghurt, deceiving unsuspecting consumers. They operated within a clandestine network, utilizing over 240 shops transformed into makeshift factories to produce and market these hazardous goods.

These illicit operations thrived in unsanitary conditions, utilizing unhygienic water sources, toxic chemicals, saccharin, and recycled bottles. Moreover, they employed cloned packaging materials of renowned brands, perpetuating the sale of substandard and harmful products to the public. The adulteration of alcoholic beverages involved mixing cheaper sources of sugar and starch with harmful chemicals, posing severe health risks to consumers.

NAFDAC’s intervention resulted in the confiscation and subsequent destruction of over 1500 cartons of fake and substandard products during the operation. With a street value estimated at over seven hundred and fifty million naira, these products were a substantial threat to public health and safety. Additionally, the agency evacuated 300 cartons to its warehouse. Ten individuals were apprehended at the scene and are set to face legal proceedings following thorough investigations.

Due to the pervasive nature of these illegal activities, NAFDAC took the drastic step of temporarily shutting down the entire market. This measure was implemented to conduct comprehensive regulatory actions and ensure that such nefarious activities never resurface. Agreement and commitments were secured from all market stakeholders to prevent the market’s future exploitation for criminal purposes.

Upholding Safety and Vigilance

This crackdown underscores NAFDAC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding public health by curbing the production and sale of counterfeit and hazardous products. The agency’s collaboration with law enforcement agencies demonstrates a coordinated effort to dismantle organized crime networks engaged in endangering public safety. The agency urges consumers to remain vigilant, emphasizing the importance of purchasing products from authorized and reputable sources to mitigate health risks associated with counterfeit goods.

Adulterated Alcohol: Health Hazards Unveiled

Adulterated alcohol poses severe health risks, manifesting through symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, drowsiness, dizziness, and even altered skin coloration. Disturbingly, the effects can escalate to irregular breathing, low body temperature, unconsciousness, or death. Methanol, a component often present in fake vodka, can lead to permanent blindness, amplifying the dangers associated with consuming counterfeit alcoholic beverages. WHO’s Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health paints a grim picture, citing over three million global deaths due to alcohol poisoning, spotlighting the urgent need for vigilance and awareness.

Furthermore, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) rings alarm bells, revealing a startling statistic: one in every 10 cancer cases in Nigeria is linked to alcohol. In 2019 alone, 4.7 percent of total cancer cases in Nigeria were attributed to the consumption of adulterated alcohol, underscoring the urgent imperative for preventive measures and stringent checks.

NAFDAC’s Vigilant Guidelines

Amidst these dangers, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) issues crucial directives to safeguard consumers. Emphasizing vigilance, NAFDAC urges Nigerians to adopt a cautious approach and adhere to the “4 Ps” before purchasing alcohol. These directives encompass Place, Price, Packaging, and Product.

Place: Purchasing from authorized and registered outlets is imperative. NAFDAC stresses procuring drinks solely from licensed retailers, bars, and supermarkets to ensure authenticity and safety.

Price: A significantly reduced price or absence of standard taxes might signal counterfeit products. Consumers are advised to be wary of unusually low prices when purchasing alcohol.

Packaging: Scrutinizing packaging is pivotal. Consumers should watch for signs of poor quality, spelling errors, or irregular bottle shapes, and verify the manufacturer’s contact details. Broken seals or missing information could indicate unsafe contents.

Product: Trusting your senses is crucial. A pungent odor reminiscent of paint stripper or nail polish remover might signify adulteration, indicating the drink is unsafe for consumption.

Vowing to intensify efforts to reduce the prevalence of fake products, NAFDAC emphasizes its pursuit of perpetrators engaging in illegal production and urges the public to report any suspicious activities to their nearest NAFDAC office.

In essence, as the yuletide season approaches, NAFDAC’s call for vigilance becomes increasingly vital, aiming to protect citizens from the life-threatening perils posed by adulterated alcohol.
