Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo Hosts Turkey — Diplomacy Gets a Friendly Upgrade

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday hosted the newly appointed Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Mehmet Poroy, for high-level diplomatic talks aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between both countries. The meeting, which took place in Abuja, focused on shared interests, common challenges, and opportunities for deeper cooperation across key sectors.

The engagement marked Ambassador Poroy’s formal diplomatic outreach to Nigeria’s interior ministry since assuming office, underscoring Turkey’s intention to sustain and expand its relationship with Africa’s largest economy. Both delegations described the talks as cordial and forward-looking, reflecting a mutual desire to build on existing ties.

Officials present at the meeting noted that Nigeria and Turkey have enjoyed years of diplomatic engagement, particularly in trade, aviation, construction, education, and security cooperation. Monday’s discussions were seen as a continuation of efforts to reposition the relationship to better reflect evolving global and regional realities.

Minister Tunji-Ojo Focus on Mutual Respect and Strategic Collaboration

Speaking during the meeting, Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of mutual respect as the foundation of any successful bilateral relationship. He stressed that Nigeria values partnerships built on equality, shared responsibility, and long-term benefits for citizens of both countries rather than short-term diplomatic gestures.

The minister highlighted Nigeria’s readiness to collaborate more closely with Turkey in areas related to internal security, migration management, border control, and institutional capacity-building. He noted that as global mobility and security challenges continue to evolve, cooperation between nations with shared interests has become increasingly critical.

Ambassador Poroy, in response, reaffirmed Turkey’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Nigeria, describing the country as a strategic partner in Africa. He expressed Turkey’s willingness to engage constructively with Nigerian authorities to address common challenges and explore innovative solutions through sustained diplomatic dialogue.

Expanding Trade, Investment, and People-to-People Ties

Beyond security and governance issues, both sides identified trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges as critical pillars for strengthening Nigeria–Turkey relations. Minister Tunji-Ojo noted that increased economic collaboration would create jobs, stimulate growth, and foster mutual prosperity for both nations.

The Turkish ambassador acknowledged Nigeria’s vast market potential and youthful population, describing them as key drivers for future investment opportunities. He indicated that Turkish businesses remain interested in expanding their footprint in Nigeria, particularly in infrastructure development, manufacturing, and services.

Both parties also emphasized the importance of cultural and social exchanges in consolidating diplomatic relations. They agreed that closer interaction between Nigerians and Turks—through education, tourism, and professional exchanges—would help deepen mutual understanding and strengthen the bond between the two countries at the grassroots level.
