Nollywood Actor Michael Ejoor Opens Up on Battle with Depression

Nollywood actor Michael Ejoor has spoken openly about his battle with depression, shedding light on the mental health challenges that often remain hidden behind the glamorous façade of the entertainment industry. In a recent interview, the actor revealed that he went through a dark period where he struggled to find motivation, battled constant sadness, and often questioned his sense of purpose.

According to him, the pressure to maintain relevance in Nollywood, coupled with personal setbacks, weighed heavily on his mind. He explained that even though he continued to smile publicly and appeared active on social media, deep down, he was wrestling with emotions that he could not easily share with others. This inner struggle, he said, created a cycle of isolation that made it even more difficult to seek help.

Michael Ejoor emphasized that depression is not always visible and can affect anyone regardless of their career, status, or achievements. By speaking out, he hopes to encourage conversations around mental health, break the culture of silence, and remind others that no one is immune to emotional struggles.

The Pressures of Nollywood and Coping Mechanisms

The actor further highlighted how the Nollywood industry, though rewarding, comes with immense pressure. He admitted that constantly trying to meet expectations from fans, producers, and critics contributed to his emotional struggles. In his words, the demand to stay relevant and consistently deliver can sometimes push actors beyond their limits, leaving them exhausted both mentally and physically.

Michael Ejoor revealed that at the peak of his depression, he found himself withdrawing from social circles and work-related activities, as he lacked the strength to keep up with the fast-paced nature of the industry. He confessed that at some point, he contemplated giving up acting entirely, believing that stepping away might relieve some of the pressure. However, he soon realized that running away would not solve the problem, and what he truly needed was healing.

To cope, the actor began to explore healthier ways of dealing with stress. He turned to therapy, trusted friends, and faith as avenues for support. Slowly, he started regaining confidence and rebuilding his outlook on life. Michael Ejoor stressed that seeking professional help was a turning point in his journey, reminding fans that depression is a health condition that requires proper attention.

A Call for Greater Awareness and Support

Michael Ejoor concluded by urging Nigerians to pay closer attention to mental health issues, especially in an era where societal expectations often leave individuals bottling up their struggles. He pointed out that depression should not be seen as a sign of weakness but as a condition that needs understanding, empathy, and medical intervention.

He also encouraged his colleagues in Nollywood and other industries to embrace open conversations about mental well-being. According to him, silence and stigma only make things worse, while vulnerability and openness create opportunities for healing. Michael Ejoor insisted that the entertainment industry, in particular, must invest in structures that prioritize the mental health of actors who are constantly in the spotlight.

Ending on a hopeful note, the actor shared that he is now in a much better place emotionally and spiritually. While the journey has not been easy, he believes that speaking out about his experiences will inspire others facing similar battles to hold on, seek help, and remember that brighter days are possible.
