Nigerian gospel singer Mercy Chinwo has publicly accused her former manager, Ezekiel ThankGod Onyedikachi, popularly known as Eezeetee, of threatening her life and spreading false rumors about her son. In an emotional video shared on her Instagram page, Chinwo described Eezeetee as an “oppressor” who has persistently bullied her after allegedly tampering with her record label contract without her knowledge.
According to the singer, she initially chose to remain silent for the sake of the Christian community but decided to address the issue due to the severity of the accusations against her. Chinwo recounted how she was forced to relocate from Lagos to Port Harcourt because she feared for her safety. She alleged that Eezeetee openly stated that he had made her career and would “destroy” her.
Legal Battle Over Royalties and Contract Manipulation
The ongoing dispute between Mercy Chinwo and Eezeetee gained public attention after reports emerged that Chinwo had dragged her former manager to court over the alleged diversion of $345,000 in royalties. However, in her latest statement, the singer denied taking any legal action against him, instead claiming that Eezeetee was the one who had sued her.
Her lawyer, Pelumi Olajengbesi, clarified on January 25, 2025, that Chinwo had not initiated any lawsuit regarding her music catalog. He accused Eezeetee of manipulating public perception by portraying himself as a victim while continuing to oppress and intimidate Chinwo behind the scenes. The Lagos State Federal High Court has since issued a warrant for Eezeetee’s arrest, directing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to secure his appearance in court.
Allegations of False Rumors About Mercy Chinwo’s Son
A particularly shocking claim made by Mercy Chinwo in her video was that Eezeetee orchestrated malicious rumors regarding the paternity of her son. She alleged that the former manager, out of hatred for gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey, falsely spread reports claiming that Bassey was the child’s biological father.
Mercy described how bloggers were allegedly paid to spread the misinformation, causing emotional distress for her and her husband, Pastor Blessed Uzochikwa. The singer, who welcomed her first child in October 2023, tearfully stated that her family had been unfairly targeted and that these baseless accusations were part of a calculated attempt to ruin her reputation.
Eezeetee Denies Allegations, Calls Chinwo a Liar
In response to the claims, Eezeetee took to Instagram to deny any wrongdoing, accusing Mercy Chinwo of lying despite being a gospel artist. He insisted that he had never threatened her life and suggested that the singer was attempting to manipulate public sympathy.
Eezeetee further claimed that he was the one who helped build Chinwo’s career and that she had betrayed him. According to him, Chinwo’s accusations were an attempt to divert attention from the real issue—her alleged refusal to acknowledge the terms of her contract with Eezee Conceptz, the record label he owns. He dismissed her emotional plea as a publicity stunt designed to damage his reputation.
Industry Reactions and Support for Mercy Chinwo
The controversy has sparked reactions from the Nigerian gospel music industry, with several artists and fans rallying behind Mercy Chinwo. Pastor Nathaniel Bassey, who was dragged into the scandal, responded indirectly by sharing a Bible verse about truth prevailing over lies, suggesting support for Chinwo.
Fans of the award-winning gospel singer have flooded her social media pages with messages of encouragement, calling for justice and urging her to stay strong amid the storm. Some have also criticized Eezeetee, accusing him of being bitter over Chinwo’s success outside of his record label.
What’s Next? Legal Proceedings and Future Implications
With an arrest warrant issued against Eezeetee, all eyes are now on the EFCC’s next move. If found guilty of the allegations leveled against him, the former manager could face legal consequences ranging from defamation charges to potential financial penalties for any confirmed breach of contract.
For Mercy Chinwo, this case could set a precedent for other Nigerian gospel artists who have faced exploitation and unfair treatment by record labels. The gospel music industry in Nigeria is now under scrutiny, with many questioning whether young artists are adequately protected from contract manipulation, financial exploitation, and industry bullying.
