Mass Defections: PDP Governors Hold Emergency Meeting with Party Bigwigs in Abuja

As defections rock the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), governors under the party’s platform have summoned an expanded stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja to salvage the situation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Emergency Talks Amid Defections and Crisis

In a bid to address the escalating wave of defections and internal strife, PDP governors have convened an emergency meeting in Abuja with former governors, party elders, and key stakeholders. The meeting, scheduled for Sunday night, was described by insiders as a “make-or-break moment” for Nigeria’s main opposition party. Governors are expected to engage in heated deliberations over the recent exodus of party chieftains, rising disunity, and the looming 2027 general elections.

The gathering is not limited to current governors. Members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), former presiding officers of the National Assembly, and other influential voices within the party are also expected to participate. Sources within the party revealed to opitanglobamedia news that the discussions would cover major issues including the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and preparations for the PDP’s National Elective Convention slated for August.

Party Leadership Faces Reckoning

Since the 2023 general elections, the PDP has been riddled with factionalism and leadership disputes. The situation has further deteriorated due to the unresolved rift between Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, now-FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Compounding this crisis are disagreements over South-South zonal leadership positions and the unresolved appointment of a substantive National Secretary since December 2024.

Despite intervention attempts by the party’s various leadership organs—the National Working Committee (NWC), BoT, NEC, and the Governors’ Forum—there has been no meaningful resolution. Instead, these efforts have deepened internal divisions, culminating in the defection of high-profile leaders to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), further weakening PDP’s structure across state and zonal levels.

Key Defections Shake PDP’s Core

The most damaging blow came on April 23 when Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, along with his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa and other top Delta officials, defected to the APC. Their departure marked a major shift in the political balance, undermining PDP’s influence in the South-South region. Similarly, three senators from Kebbi State—Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki—also joined the APC after a high-profile meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

These defections have fueled accusations by PDP leaders that the Tinubu-led government is orchestrating a campaign to turn Nigeria into a one-party state. PDP governors had previously held closed-door meetings, but Sunday’s expanded session signifies the urgency and seriousness of the party’s leadership to confront the threat head-on and develop a strategy to retain its relevance.

Leadership Reacts: Defectors Called Out, Hope in NEC

Acting PDP National Chairman Umar Damagum, in a strongly worded statement to opitanglobamedia news , condemned the defectors, accusing them of lacking conscience and political integrity. “They have shown their true character. What chased them from PDP will chase them out of APC too,” Damagum said. He urged loyal party members to remain steadfast, stating that 2027 would present an opportunity for Nigerians to choose between “slavery and freedom.”

Similarly, PDP’s National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, remained optimistic, insisting that defections were not one-sided and that more politicians would soon cross over to PDP. House of Representatives Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, described the defections as reflective of Nigeria’s ideological vacuum, while calling for political reorientation and constitutional reform. He maintained confidence that the upcoming NEC meeting on May 27 would serve as a turning point.

NEC and National Convention Seen as Redemption Opportunities

Amid the gloom, PDP leaders are looking ahead to the May 27 NEC meeting and the August national convention as critical opportunities to reposition the party. Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Diran Odeyemi, and Deputy Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, expressed hope that these gatherings would settle lingering disputes and reestablish internal cohesion. “NEC is the highest decision-making body of the party. We believe this will mark the beginning of the party’s renewal,” Odeyemi stated.

Osadolor added that Nigerians and party members alike are awaiting clarity on several unresolved issues, including the fate of the National Secretary position and ratification of recent congresses. He insisted that party unity, bolstered by collective leadership and wisdom, was achievable. “Superior advice is now prevailing. We’re confident that this party will not just survive but will emerge stronger,” he said.

The expanded meeting in Abuja marks a crucial phase in PDP’s struggle to reclaim its footing. Whether the party’s leadership can chart a cohesive path forward in the face of mounting challenges remains to be seen—but for many within the PDP, this is a pivotal moment that could determine its political survival ahead of 2027.
