Lt. Gen. Waidu Shaibu, The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), has assured Nigerians that the Nigerian Army is intensifying operations to decisively curb terrorist attacks in Niger State and across the country. He emphasized that the renewed military push is part of a broader national security strategy aimed at restoring peace, protecting civilians, and dismantling terrorist networks wherever they operate.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu gave the assurance amid growing concerns over recent security breaches, stressing that the Army remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibility of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity. According to him, the military is adapting its tactics to match evolving threats and ensure that criminal elements no longer exploit security gaps.
He urged Nigerians to remain calm and supportive of the armed forces, noting that public cooperation and credible intelligence are critical to the success of ongoing counterterrorism operations nationwide.
Renewed Military Offensive Targets Terrorist Strongholds
The COAS disclosed that the Nigerian Army has launched a renewed and more coordinated offensive against terrorist groups operating in Niger State and other flashpoints across the country. He explained that the operations involve increased troop deployment, enhanced intelligence gathering, and improved inter-agency collaboration to neutralize threats before they escalate.
According to Lt. Gen. Shaibu, recent attacks have only strengthened the Army’s resolve to confront terrorism head-on. He stated that military formations have been directed to sustain pressure on armed groups, dismantle their supply routes, and deny them access to local communities and critical infrastructure.
He further noted that the Army is leveraging modern technology, surveillance systems, and real-time intelligence to improve operational effectiveness, ensuring that terrorist elements are tracked, engaged, and eliminated with minimal collateral damage.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu: Focus on Niger State and Nationwide Security Stability
Lt. Gen. Shaibu identified Niger State as a strategic priority due to its terrain and recent security challenges, stressing that special attention is being given to the state without neglecting other vulnerable regions. He said the Army’s approach is holistic, addressing both immediate threats and long-term security stabilization.
He reassured residents of Niger State that the military is working round the clock to secure communities, protect livelihoods, and allow displaced persons to return safely to their homes. The COAS emphasized that civilians remain central to military planning, with strict rules of engagement to safeguard innocent lives.
Beyond Niger State, the Army leadership affirmed that similar operations are ongoing nationwide, ensuring that no region becomes a safe haven for terrorists, bandits, or other criminal groups.
Call for Public Support and Confidence in the Armed Forces
The COAS called on Nigerians to continue supporting the Armed Forces by providing timely and accurate information that can aid military operations. He warned against spreading unverified information, noting that misinformation can undermine security efforts and embolden criminal groups.
Lt. Gen. Shaibu reiterated that the Nigerian Army is motivated, well-equipped, and determined to win the fight against terrorism. He assured citizens that troop welfare, training, and morale remain top priorities under his leadership.
He concluded by reaffirming the Army’s unwavering commitment to national peace and security, stressing that sustained military pressure, combined with public cooperation, will ultimately curb terrorist attacks and restore lasting stability across Niger State and Nigeria as a whole.
