Hon. Leke Abejide has categorically stated that former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, no longer holds political weight capable of influencing the 2027 general elections. He argued that Amaechi’s political prime has passed, noting that the Rivers State political terrain has shifted beyond his control. According to Abejide, Amaechi is “no longer a politician in the present tense but in the past,” stressing that the forthcoming electoral contest will only feature personalities who can galvanize mass followership.
Hon. Leke Abejide added that Amaechi’s inability to command grassroots loyalty in Rivers State puts him at a severe disadvantage against heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi. He noted that modern political battles are fought on the strength of organic mobilization and not on historical achievements. The lawmaker insisted that anyone unable to pull an energetic crowd has no place in the 2027 race.
ADC Faces Internal Rumble Over Coalition Threat
Hon. Leke Abejide has warned that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) may face an internal shake-up if heavyweight politicians attempt to use it as a platform for 2027. He disclosed that coalition talks involving Atiku Abubakar, Rauf Aregbesola, David Mark, Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi are generating tension within the party. According to him, such a coalition might push existing ADC leaders out of the party they built from the ground up.
Hon. Leke Abejide maintained that the ADC is not a dumping ground for political figures looking for electoral refuge after losing relevance in their original parties. He stressed that unless there is clarity about the ideological alignment of these coalition members, the ADC leadership will resist any takeover attempt. The lawmaker made it clear that political alliances should be based on principles, not desperation.
Atiku and Obi Recognized, Amaechi Rejected
Hon. Leke Abejide expressed his acknowledgment of Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi as serious contenders in the 2027 elections. He said both men have proven their ability to attract nationwide followership, making them relevant political actors. In contrast, he dismissed Rotimi Amaechi as a spent force with no present-day political machinery to back him.
Hon. Leke Abejide underscored that elections are won not by nostalgia but by active engagement with the electorate. He argued that Atiku and Obi’s continued public visibility gives them a strategic advantage over Amaechi, who has largely retreated from active political participation. The Kogi lawmaker reiterated that 2027 will be a contest of influence, not memories.
Grassroots Politics Will Decide 2027
Hon. Leke Abejide emphasized that the 2027 general elections will be decided at the grassroots level. He explained that in Nigeria’s evolving democratic environment, any politician unable to rally significant support from the ordinary people is doomed to fail. He cautioned that high-profile political titles do not guarantee electoral victory.
Hon. Leke Abejide stressed that even political veterans must maintain constant interaction with their base to remain relevant. He cited examples of politicians who once held top offices but faded away due to disconnection from the grassroots. The legislator asserted that Amaechi’s waning influence in Rivers State is a classic example of this political decline.
Coalition Politics: A Double-Edged Sword
Hon. Leke Abejide described coalition politics as both an opportunity and a risk. While acknowledging that mergers can amplify political strength, he warned that forced coalitions often lead to party instability. He said the inclusion of conflicting personalities with different political ideologies could create factionalism within any host party.
Hon. Leke Abejide argued that the ADC cannot afford to compromise its internal stability in the pursuit of short-term electoral gains. He cautioned against allowing political big names to hijack the party’s machinery without a clear commitment to its founding values. According to him, any coalition move must be strategic, not desperate.
The Road to 2027: Strategic Positioning Needed
Hon. Leke Abejide concluded that the road to 2027 requires deliberate political positioning. He urged parties to focus on building credibility, enhancing voter engagement, and presenting candidates with both mass appeal and political stamina. He emphasized that reputation alone will not be enough to secure electoral victory.
Hon. Leke Abejide predicted that the 2027 elections will be one of Nigeria’s most competitive contests, with alliances, defections, and political reinventions defining the landscape. He reiterated that in this new political era, only those with a consistent grassroots presence and a coherent strategy can hope to emerge victorious.
