The Lagos State House of Assembly has disclosed its plan to investigate former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over alleged corruption following his removal from office. Lagos State House of Assembly Awaits Obasa’s Return for Probe

The spokesperson for the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olukayode Ogundipe, revealed that the former Speaker’s presence is necessary for further deliberations on the allegations against him. Speaking with OpitanglobaMedia News on Monday at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, Ogundipe stated that various financial misappropriation claims had been made against Obasa, but the Lagos State House of Assembly preferred to address the matter formally.

“There are other things we’ve also been hearing about different amounts of money being spent by him. We felt we didn’t know how they got the record of those, but the ones we have, when he’s seated with us, actions will be taken,” Ogundipe said. When asked about a possible petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), he indicated that the House might establish a committee to examine the case or let the leadership handle it directly.

Obasa Dismisses Corruption Allegations, Calls Process Unfair

Despite his removal by a majority of lawmakers, Obasa has strongly denied all allegations of corruption and financial misconduct. Addressing his supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge last Saturday, he insisted that his ousting was not conducted through the proper legal process.

“If you want to claim that I’m corrupt, please prove it, let us see it,” Obasa declared. He further maintained that he remained the legitimate Speaker, rejecting the Lagos State House of Assembly’s decision. However, Ogundipe reiterated that the removal process was fully constitutional and followed the proper legal framework. “The process was duly followed, and the members, we know what we saw, and we intended to change guard and that’s exactly what we did,” he added.

Tightened Security at Assembly Amid Leadership Tension

Amid the ongoing controversy, security was heightened at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex on Monday, preventing journalists and other visitors from freely accessing the premises. Security officials, including policemen, conducted thorough screenings, checking identity cards and barring individuals who failed to present valid identification.

The security reinforcement came after Obasa’s recent statement in which he insisted on his legitimacy as Speaker, suggesting that lawmakers had not followed due process in his removal. The Lagos State House of Assembly had initially scheduled a plenary session for Monday, but it was postponed to allow lawmakers to settle into the new leadership structure peacefully.

Meranda Takes Over as Speaker Lagos State House of Assembly Amid Uncertainty

Following Obasa’s removal, former Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was officially sworn in as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. On Monday morning, she assumed office, flanked by lawmakers who openly supported her leadership. However, Obasa was absent from the Assembly despite expectations that he would appear.

Ogundipe reaffirmed that the Lagos State House of Assembly remained calm and that Obasa was welcome to return. “We are also expecting him to be here with us so that they can see it is not about the noise outside, it is a very calm place,” he stated. With the political uncertainty surrounding Obasa’s next moves, all eyes remain on the Lagos State House of Assembly as lawmakers prepare for their next course of action, including a possible formal probe into his tenure.
