Labour Party Crisis: Abure Faction Appeals to Tinubu to Rein in Governor Otti

In a dramatic escalation of internal strife within the Labour Party (LP), the faction led by National Chairman Julius Abure has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and restrain Abia State Governor Alex Otti, accusing him of threatening the Labour party’s national leadership. The call was made during a press briefing in Abuja on Monday by the Factional National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk.

Farouk alleged that Governor Otti had recently demanded the arrest of Abure, describing the move as an overreach and a violation of the Labour party’s internal democratic principles. “We are not only condemning this despicable action of the governor, who was recently suspended by the Labour party, but are also seeking the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to persuade the governor from further threats to our party and its leadership,” Farouk stated.

The faction claimed that Otti has continuously undermined the Labour party’s authority since assuming office and that his actions threaten to destabilize the internal cohesion necessary for the Labour Party to remain a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape.

Allegations of Harassment and Intimidation

Alhaji Farouk detailed what he described as a disturbing pattern of harassment and intimidation of party officials by Governor Otti. He recounted incidents where several LP leaders were allegedly detained on the governor’s orders simply for conducting lawful political activities.

“In the last few months, His Excellency, Dr. Otti, ordered the arrest and detention of our National Vice Chairman, Comrade Ceekay Igara, the State Chairman, Prince Ndubeze, and other Labour party leaders for holding a lawful meeting in Aba, Abia State,” Farouk said. These arrests, he argued, were not only unlawful but aimed at stifling internal dissent and consolidating control.

Farouk further revealed that during a meeting at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, Otti allegedly issued direct threats against Abure and the National Working Committee (NWC), vowing to orchestrate a “doomsday” for the current leadership. These alleged remarks have sparked concerns among party faithful about the growing influence of non-NWC actors in party affairs.

“There Is No Place for Tyranny in Democracy”

Responding to Governor Otti’s reported characterization of Julius Abure as a “clown in search of a crown,” the faction strongly condemned the remark and accused the governor of disrespect and ingratitude. “As of 2022, when Governor Otti joined the Labour Party after being rejected by virtually every other political party, Abure was already the National Chairman—a king who made Otti what he is today. Otti, who has not added value to the party that made him, is actually the clown,” Farouk countered.

The faction expressed disappointment that Governor Otti failed to acknowledge the Labour party’s contributions to his political rise, alleging that he has since distanced himself from LP structures and ignored party officials, even during his inauguration. “That event was a one chance experience for many of us. He used the party and dumped it,” Farouk lamented.

According to the faction, Governor Otti’s actions are part of a larger plot to dismantle the Labour Party from within ahead of the 2027 general elections. They accused him of laying the groundwork for a defection to another political platform, thereby weakening LP’s chances in the next political cycle.

Clarifying the Supreme Court’s Ruling

The Abure faction also addressed recent misinterpretations surrounding the Supreme Court’s judgment on the Labour Party’s leadership dispute. Farouk clarified that the ruling did not remove Julius Abure as National Chairman nor transfer party control to Otti and his loyalists.

“The Supreme Court’s position was clear: matters of leadership within a political party are internal and cannot be determined by any court. Otti and his allies have no legal grounds to lay claim to the party’s leadership,” Farouk emphasized. He added that those exploiting the court’s decision to justify insubordination within the party are engaging in deliberate misinformation.

This clarification comes amid persistent claims by Otti’s supporters that the judiciary had effectively endorsed a leadership change, fueling further divisions within the party. The Abure faction warned that continued distortion of the court’s position risks undermining public confidence in party structures and democratic processes.

A Labour Party at Crossroads

The ongoing feud between the Abure-led NWC and Governor Alex Otti has exposed deep fissures within the Labour Party, threatening its unity and effectiveness as a major political force ahead of future elections. Labour Party observers and stakeholders are expressing growing concern about the implications of such public discord.

While calls for dialogue and reconciliation have surfaced from various quarters, the factional tensions continue to escalate, with no signs of compromise. The appeal to President Tinubu—an outsider to the party—is seen as both desperate and strategic, indicating a lack of internal conflict-resolution mechanisms within the Labour Party.

As the political drama unfolds, all eyes are now on the presidency and whether it will choose to wade into the crisis of a rival party. Meanwhile, Labour Party loyalists across the nation await clarity, unity, and leadership as the 2027 electoral battle draws closer.
