— Agbu Kefas, Governor of Taraba State, has firmly dismissed rumours of a rift between him and retired General Theophilus Danjuma following his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at the State House in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu, Kefas described speculation about tension between himself and Danjuma as unfounded, stressing that their long-standing relationship remains intact and cordial.
No Rift with Danjuma, Says Kefas
Governor Kefas emphasised that his relationship with Danjuma, a respected elder statesman and former Minister of Defence, is rooted in shared military and personal history. He described Danjuma as a father figure and insisted that politics has never created division between them.
According to the governor, he consulted Danjuma before leaving the PDP and received his blessings. He maintained that the decision to defect was not taken in isolation and that he continues to enjoy the goodwill and support of the retired general.
By publicly clarifying the issue, Kefas sought to quell growing political speculation within Taraba and beyond, where observers had linked his party switch to alleged disagreements with key political stakeholders.
Defection Driven by Strategy, Not Money
Addressing allegations that financial incentives influenced his move to the APC, Kefas categorically denied receiving any money in exchange for his defection. He stated that his decision was based on conviction and strategic considerations aimed at accelerating development in Taraba State.
The governor Kefas explained that aligning with the ruling party at the federal level would enhance cooperation and facilitate greater access to resources necessary for security, agriculture, and infrastructure development.
His defection in late 2025 subsequently triggered a wave of crossovers by lawmakers, local government chairpersons, and party executives in Taraba, reshaping the political landscape of the state.
Focus on Security, Agriculture and 2027 Elections
Kefas disclosed that his meeting with President Tinubu focused on strengthening security, boosting agricultural productivity, improving residents’ welfare, and deepening federal-state collaboration. He described the engagement as meaningful and noted that it marked his first official meeting with the president since joining the APC.
He stated that security conditions in Taraba have improved significantly, resulting in reduced violence and enhanced mobility across communities. In agriculture, the governor highlighted mechanisation efforts, including the importation of tractors and plans to establish local processing plants to strengthen value chains and create employment opportunities.
Looking ahead, Kefas pledged to deliver Taraba State for President Tinubu in the 2027 general elections. He expressed confidence that ongoing grassroots-focused policies would translate into electoral support. He also called for unity and prayers as Christians observe Lent and Muslims mark Ramadan, emphasising the need for peace and cooperation across religious lines.
