The Jigawa Police Command has announced the arrest of 82 additional suspects involved in looting and vandalizing public property during recent hunger protests in the state. This brings the total number of suspects apprehended since August 1 to 294. The arrests come amid ongoing efforts to restore order and hold those responsible for the disturbances accountable.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the protests, initially sparked by widespread hunger, quickly escalated into violence and looting. The Jigawa Police Command, under the leadership of its spokesperson, ASP Lawan Shiisu, has been actively working to recover stolen items and detain those involved in the unlawful activities.
Items Recovered from Suspects
In a detailed report, ASP Lawan Shiisu outlined the extensive range of items recovered from 212 suspects. These items include 303 bags of fertilizer, 50 motorcycles, three tricycles, 12 bicycles, nine chairs, 54 cartons of mosquito nets, two bags of rice, and various pieces of office furniture. The recovery of these items highlights the scale of looting that occurred during the protests.
Further operations by the Police Command led to the recovery of 249 bags of fertilizer, 100 cartons of mosquito nets, 11 motorcycles, and four air conditioners. Additionally, four televisions, three desktop computers, 34 sachets of agrochemicals, rice, a water pump, solar panels, and 10 office chairs were also retrieved. These items were seized during targeted police operations in Kazaure, Babura, and Gagarawa Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Continued Efforts and Legal Proceedings
The police spokesperson noted that the command’s efforts extended beyond recovery operations. On Monday, 45 more suspects were arrested in Babura, Gwiwa, Roni, and Birnin Kudu LGAs. During these operations, the police recovered a significant haul, including 30 bags of guinea corn, 94 bags of fertilizer, 335 bales of mosquito nets, two motorcycles, four bags of hibiscus flowers, 12 refrigerators, and 12 computers.
Other recovered items from the same day included three printers, six ceiling fans, eight solar panels, 66 office chairs, two wheelbarrows, and two carpets. ASP Lawan Shiisu confirmed that no fewer than 195 of the suspects have already been charged to court. He also assured the public that the state is now peaceful, with no reports of further violence.
