IPOB Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu: Court’s Life Sentence Spurs National Outrage

IPOB Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court after being convicted on several terrorism-related charges. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu was found guilty on Counts 1, 4, 5, and 6, which the court described as offenses of the highest magnitude requiring the maximum penalty. The judgment marks one of the most consequential rulings in Nigeria’s recent judicial history involving a separatist figure.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu also received additional sentences of 20 years imprisonment on Count 3—with no option of a fine—and 5 years imprisonment on Count 7, also without a fine. The court ruled that all imposed sentences will run concurrently, meaning the life sentence stands as the operative punishment. Justice Omotosho emphasized that the decision was grounded in extensive evidence, witness accounts, and documented activities attributed to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, throughout the proceedings, remained the central focus as the court highlighted the need to balance justice with national security considerations. The judge noted that the ruling serves both punitive and deterrent purposes, sending a message to groups or individuals whose activities may threaten Nigeria’s unity or undermine public safety.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Ordered Into Strict Protective Custody, Barred From Digital Devices

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will not be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre, as Justice Omotosho ruled that the facility is unsuitable due to past jailbreaks and the defendant’s “violent tendencies and associated atrocities.” Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is instead to be held in protective custody under extremely tight security arrangements, with the specific detention location withheld for strategic reasons.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, according to the court, poses a high-security risk in conventional detention centres where coordinated attacks or jailbreak attempts could occur. Justice Omotosho stated that protective custody ensures both national security and the safety of the defendant himself, given the violent episodes that have erupted around his arrest and detention in the past.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has also been barred from possessing or accessing any digital device, including phones, laptops, and tablets. The court stated that such devices had previously enabled him to communicate directives that escalated unrest. The only exception, Justice Omotosho ruled, would be access specifically approved and supervised by the National Security Adviser (NSA).

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Loses IPOB Broadcasting Equipment as Court Orders Permanent Forfeiture

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has been stripped of all transmitters, broadcasting equipment, and technical devices belonging to IPOB or used by Radio Biafra, following a forfeiture order issued by the court. Justice Omotosho held that these tools played a central role in amplifying messages capable of inciting violence and promoting separatist activities across the South-East.

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s forfeited equipment includes high-capacity transmitters, signal boosters, studio consoles, and communication hardware seized during raids by security agencies. The judge ruled that these items are now the permanent property of the Federal Government of Nigeria, as they were instrumental in facilitating criminal communication networks linked to the proscribed organization.

Nnamdi Kanu, according to the judgment, will no longer have access to any communication infrastructure that could be used to mobilize supporters or disseminate broadcasts. Legal analysts say the ruling significantly weakens IPOB’s operational capacity by dismantling its media and propaganda machinery, marking a decisive step in the government’s broader security strategy.
