Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has announced the deployment of 35,000 police officers to ensure a peaceful and credible election ahead of the Edo State Gubernatorial Election slated for September 21st, 2024. This large-scale mobilization will be complemented by the addition of 8,000 personnel from other security agencies, including the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
The announcement underlines the federal government’s commitment to safeguarding the electoral process. With tension rising due to political campaigns, the deployment aims to prevent any form of violence, voter suppression, or election manipulation. Edo State has a history of being a politically charged region, and this election is expected to be highly competitive, warranting such a high-level security operation.
Collaborative Efforts with INEC for Smooth Conduct
In collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the security forces have begun putting structures in place to ensure a seamless and transparent election. The Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun stressed that security measures would not only cover the election day but also pre- and post-election activities, ensuring the safety of electoral officials, candidates, and voters.
INEC has already made significant strides in deploying necessary materials and training staff across polling units in Edo State. INEC and security forces will jointly monitor the situation to ensure early detection of threats or irregularities. Their coordination is crucial in maintaining the trust of the electorate and ensuring that no single party can manipulate the electoral outcome.
Kayode Egbetokun Addressing Threats of Election Violence
Given the rising incidents of electoral violence in previous elections, the Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun emphasized the need for proactive measures to address potential security threats. This deployment aims to avert clashes between supporters of rival political parties, which have been reported in some parts of Edo State during campaign rallies.
In recent weeks, concerns have been raised about the possibility of political thugs disrupting the election. With the deployment of heavily armed police and military units to flashpoints, the police chief assured that law and order would be maintained. Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities promptly.
Protecting Voters and Upholding Democratic Values
Ensuring the safety of voters remains a priority for the Nigerian police force. With reports of voter intimidation circulating in the run-up to the election, Kayode Egbetokun reiterated that every eligible voter should feel confident and safe in exercising their civic right. Armed security personnel will be stationed at polling units, while mobile police units will patrol more volatile areas.
The Edo election has drawn significant attention as it is seen as a barometer for the upcoming national elections. As such, a smooth, peaceful, and credible election in Edo State is paramount for restoring confidence in Nigeria’s democratic processes. The security measures in place are designed to reinforce the public’s trust that the election will be free from undue influence or coercion.
Inter-Agency Coordination for Efficient Security Operations
The success of the security deployment depends on the coordination between the police and other security agencies. In addition to the 35,000 police officers, the 8,000 personnel from the NSCDC and DSS will provide logistical and intelligence support. This inter-agency cooperation is expected to enhance the efficiency of the security apparatus during the election period.
According to the Inspector-General, Kayode Egbetokun a joint command center will be set up to streamline communication between different units and agencies. This center will oversee real-time reporting of incidents, allowing for rapid response to any emerging security threats. The involvement of multiple agencies is intended to prevent any security lapses that could jeopardize the election’s integrity.
Safeguarding Post-Election Period and Addressing Electoral Disputes
The post-election period often poses a significant challenge in Nigeria due to the high possibility of electoral disputes and civil unrest. Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun stressed that the security forces would remain vigilant after the election results are announced. Security personnel will be stationed across sensitive areas to maintain order and prevent post-election violence.
Additionally, the police force, in conjunction with INEC and judicial bodies, will facilitate the legal resolution of any electoral disputes. Candidates and political parties are encouraged to seek legal redress through appropriate channels rather than resort to violence. These measures reflect the police’s determination to uphold the rule of law and ensure that the Edo gubernatorial election is peaceful from start to finish.
