INEC Requests ₦873.78 Billion — Is Nigeria Conducting Elections or Hosting the Olympics?

INEC has proposed a total budget of ₦873.78 billion for the conduct of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, positioning the exercise as one of the most financially demanding in the nation’s democratic history. The electoral body explained that the proposal covers logistics, personnel training, security arrangements, voter education, and the nationwide deployment of both sensitive and non-sensitive materials.

INEC stated that the rising cost of elections is influenced by inflation, expansion of polling units, increased voter population, and the need for improved operational efficiency. The commission noted that lessons learned from previous elections have informed the financial projections for 2027, with emphasis on minimizing delays and operational setbacks.

Independent National Electoral Commission emphasized that early budget approval and timely release of funds are critical to ensuring smooth preparations. The commission warned that delayed funding could affect procurement timelines, staff recruitment, training exercises, and nationwide voter sensitization programs ahead of the 2027 polls.

INEC Allocates Over N200B to Strengthen Election Technology

INEC has earmarked over ₦200 billion from the proposed ₦873.78 billion budget specifically for election technology upgrades and maintenance. The commission revealed that the funds will support improvements in biometric voter accreditation systems, electronic result transmission devices, and data management infrastructure.

INEC explained that technological investment remains central to improving transparency and reducing electoral malpractice. By strengthening digital systems, the commission aims to enhance real-time result transmission, protect electoral data, and prevent system failures that previously generated public concern.

INEC further assured stakeholders that enhanced cybersecurity frameworks will be integrated into the 2027 election process. The commission noted that safeguarding servers, databases, and digital transmission platforms is essential to building voter confidence and ensuring credible outcomes.

INEC Budget Proposal Sparks National Debate

INEC’s proposed ₦873.78 billion election budget has triggered reactions from political stakeholders, civil society groups, and economic analysts. While some observers consider the figure justified due to Nigeria’s size and security challenges, others are calling for strict transparency and accountability in the utilization of public funds.

Independent National Electoral Commission maintained that credible elections are fundamental to democratic stability and long-term national development. The commission stressed that adequate funding is necessary to guarantee free, fair, and transparent polls capable of strengthening public trust in the electoral system.

Independent National Electoral Commission now awaits legislative review and approval of the proposed 2027 election budget by the National Assembly. If approved, the funding could pave the way for Nigeria’s most technologically advanced and resource-intensive general elections since the country’s return to democratic governance in 1999.
