In Enugu,18 Killed, 13 Rescued as Petrol Tanker Explodes

Tragedy struck in Enugu yesterday as a petrol tanker exploded at the Ugwu Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, killing at least 18 people, including three children. The incident, which occurred around 11:30 a.m., sent panic through the area, with eyewitnesses describing scenes of horror as flames engulfed multiple vehicles and trapped several victims.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the accident was caused by a brake failure, leading to a collision involving 17 vehicles, including a petrol tanker, a water tanker, 15 cars, and a tricycle. Out of these, 11 vehicles were completely burnt. Rescue operations were severely hampered by the intensity of the blaze, which made access to victims difficult. While 13 individuals were rescued, 18 others, including some who attempted to flee the scene, were burnt beyond recognition.

Governor Mbah Visits Scene, Orders Full Investigation

Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, visited the accident site to assess the situation and expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives. Addressing the press, he assured that the Enugu state government had already initiated efforts to provide medical care for the injured and support for affected families. He directed health officials, including the Chief Medical Director of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTTH), to ensure that survivors received maximum medical attention.

Governor Mbah also ordered a full-scale investigation into the accident to determine the root cause and prevent future occurrences. He instructed the Enugu Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Franklin Agbakoba, and the State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Obi Ozor, to enforce strict road safety measures. These include ensuring that all tankers carrying inflammable products have anti-spill locks to prevent fuel spillage in the event of an accident.

Enugu Government to Enforce Road Safety Measures

In response to the deadly explosion, Governor Mbah emphasized the need for stricter regulations on tanker operations within the Enugu state. He disclosed that discussions were already underway with the FRSC to enforce a ban on tankers lacking anti-spill locks, a critical safety feature designed to prevent fuel leaks during accidents. The governor noted that enforcing these regulations could significantly reduce the frequency of such tragedies.

Additionally, he pledged that the Enugu State government would not wait for federal intervention but would take immediate action to repair the damaged section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. Acknowledging the deplorable state of some federal roads in the region, he stressed that proactive measures were necessary to prevent further loss of lives.

Recurring Tanker Explosions Raise Safety Concerns

The Enugu tanker explosion marks the third major fuel tanker accident in Nigeria since the beginning of the year. Earlier this month, a similar incident at Dikko Junction in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State claimed at least 98 lives and left 69 others injured. Another explosion in Agbor, Delta State, on January 6 resulted in the deaths of five people and the destruction of several buildings, including bank offices.

These frequent occurrences have reignited concerns over road safety, vehicle maintenance, and regulatory enforcement in Nigeria. Analysts argue that poor road conditions, reckless driving, and inadequate enforcement of safety measures contribute significantly to the rising number of tanker-related accidents. Stakeholders are now calling for urgent government intervention, including stricter vehicle inspections, better road maintenance, and improved emergency response mechanisms to mitigate the impact of such disasters.

Public Outcry Over Rising Tanker Explosions

The recurrent fuel tanker explosions have sparked outrage on social media, with Nigerians demanding immediate government intervention. A user, Khadijah Muhammad, lamented on X (formerly Twitter): “What’s really going on in this country? Tankers are taking lives everywhere. Something is wrong, and it needs to be addressed immediately.”

Another user, Okoro Ugwu, urged the government to redesign Ugwu Onyeama and Milikin Hill roads, stressing that they no longer meet the needs of modern Enugu. “Sir, look at the bigger picture. This tragedy should not be forgotten after a few days of mourning,” he wrote. Others, like Otiz, called for an in-depth investigation into the rising frequency of tanker explosions, while Dond suggested that the Nigerian government should shift to pipeline transportation and reduce reliance on road tankers.

With these increasing tragedies, authorities are now under immense pressure to implement lasting solutions to prevent further loss of lives.
