Impeached Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa: Opposition Demands Probe, Security Tightens Around Assembly

The Lagos State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) have called for a thorough investigation of the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This demand comes amidst allegations of corruption and financial misconduct levied against Obasa.

Speaking to Opitanglobamedia News, Lagos PDP Publicity Secretary, Hakeem Amode, insisted that a formal petition must be submitted to the EFCC. Amode stressed, “It should not remain mere allegations. The Assembly must present the evidence to the EFCC for a comprehensive investigation.” Similarly, LP Secretary Sam Okpala stated, “If there’s a prima facie case against him, he must face the law, provided this is not a witch-hunt.”

PDP chieftain Chief Bode George added a political dimension, emphasizing Mudashiru Obasa’s alleged disrespect towards Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the 2024 budget presentation. Describing Mudashiru Obasa’s actions as “dishonorable,” George underscored the need for accountability and due process in Lagos politics.

Mudashiru Obasa and Supporters Remain Silent Amid Turmoil

Since his impeachment on Monday, Mudashiru Obasa has not publicly addressed the allegations or the Assembly’s decision to remove him. His Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, has also refrained from commenting, while close allies have cited fear of political repercussions for their silence.

Sources suggest that Mudashiru Obasa’s dismissal resulted from strained relations with Governor Sanwo-Olu and interventions by high-ranking APC leaders, including President Bola Tinubu. Mudashiru Obasa, currently reported to be in the United States, appears isolated, with his loyalists reluctant to defend him openly due to concerns about their own political aspirations.

In Agege, Mudashiru Obasa’s stronghold, the reaction has been muted. While some loyalists expressed disappointment, others have moved on. “The removal doesn’t affect our daily lives. We’ll remember the infrastructure projects, but we’ve moved past the political drama,” said Taofik Ilesanmi, a local resident.

Heavy Security Presence at Lagos Assembly

Security remains tight around the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, following the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Armed personnel and patrol vehicles have been deployed to prevent any potential unrest, especially after protests erupted on Monday.

A group of about 15 supporters of Mudashiru Obasa gathered at the Assembly complex to express solidarity but were swiftly detained by police. Though initial reports claimed their whereabouts were unknown, sources confirmed their release later on Monday night. “They were released around 11 PM,” said a community insider. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Task Force denied involvement, leaving questions about the operation’s oversight unanswered.

New Speaker Seeks Endorsement from GAC

Mojisola Meranda, the newly elected Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, wasted no time consolidating her position. On Tuesday, Meranda, accompanied by key lawmakers, met with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) at Lagos House, Marina. The meeting was described as a step to seek the blessings and support of the APC’s apex decision-making body.

Briefly addressing the press after the closed-door meeting, Meranda said, “We came to brief them about yesterday’s events and to seek their blessings, which we’ve received.” While the meeting bolsters Meranda’s legitimacy as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly, her ability to navigate the political undercurrents following Obasa’s impeachment will be critical in stabilizing the legislative house.

Implications of Obasa’s Removal on Lagos Politics

The impeachment of Mudasiru Obasa marks a turning point in Lagos State’s political dynamics. Political analysts argue that his strained relationship with Governor Sanwo-Olu, coupled with internal party disputes, contributed to his downfall. His ouster also paves the way for a new era, with Mojisola Meranda’s emergence as a symbol of change and inclusivity in Lagos politics.

As the state adjusts to this leadership transition, questions remain about the transparency of governance and the accountability of political leaders. For many Lagosians, the coming weeks will determine whether the allegations against Obasa are thoroughly investigated or dismissed as mere political maneuvers.
