A civil society organisation, the Independent Hajj Reporters (IHR), has called on the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) to commence early registration for the 2027 Hajj and establish a dedicated calendar harmonisation committee. The group argues that persistent logistical and administrative challenges affecting Nigeria’s Hajj operations stem largely from delayed planning and late pilgrim registration processes.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, IHR’s National Coordinator, Ibrahim Muhammad, emphasised that proactive planning would significantly improve coordination, reduce last-minute pressures, and enhance the overall pilgrimage experience for Nigerian pilgrims.
IRH Figure Out Persistent Delays and Operational Challenges
The IHR noted that Nigeria’s Hajj operations have, over the years, been plagued by recurring setbacks, many of which are linked to poor adherence to pre-Hajj timelines. According to the organisation, late registration of pilgrims often disrupts crucial arrangements such as accommodation, transportation, and visa processing.
Muhammad explained that these delays not only increase operational costs but also place undue pressure on officials responsible for coordinating the pilgrimage. He added that the compressed timelines frequently result in avoidable errors, which can affect the welfare and satisfaction of pilgrims.
The group stressed that aligning Nigeria’s Hajj calendar more closely with that of Saudi authorities would help streamline preparations and ensure that key milestones are met without unnecessary haste.
Call for Calendar Harmonisation Committee
To address these concerns, IHR proposed the creation of a specialised Hajj calendar harmonisation committee. The committee, it suggested, would be tasked with synchronising local planning schedules with international Hajj timelines, particularly those set by Saudi Arabia.
Such a committee, according to the group, would include representatives from NAHCON, state Muslim pilgrimage boards, and other relevant stakeholders. Its primary objective would be to ensure that all preparatory activities—from registration to final departure—are executed in a timely and coordinated manner.
The organisation maintained that IRH institutionalising this approach would reduce uncertainty and improve transparency in the Hajj management process, ultimately benefiting both officials and intending pilgrims.
Early Registration as a Strategic Solution
IHR further urged NAHCON to open registration for the 2027 Hajj well ahead of time, describing early enrolment as a critical step toward resolving longstanding inefficiencies. Early registration, the group argued, would provide accurate data for planning and enable better negotiation of services such as flights and accommodation.
Muhammad noted that countries with more efficient Hajj systems often begin their preparations years in advance, allowing them to secure favourable arrangements and deliver a smoother experience for their pilgrims. He encouraged Nigerian authorities to adopt similar practices to remain competitive and improve service delivery.
The group concluded by reiterating its commitment to advocating reforms that will enhance the credibility and effectiveness of Nigeria’s Hajj operations.
