The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially signed the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024, a landmark legislation aimed at transforming the electricity sector within the state. The new law establishes a legal framework that allows Lagos to regulate, generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently within its jurisdiction.
According to the state government, the law is designed to accelerate power sector reforms and reduce the persistent electricity challenges faced by residents and businesses across Lagos. The legislation also aligns with recent constitutional reforms that allow states to play a more active role in electricity generation and distribution.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the signing of the law as a historic milestone for Lagos, noting that it represents a bold step toward achieving reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity supply. He emphasized that improved power infrastructure is critical to economic growth and industrial development in the state.
Governor Inaugurates Lagos Electricity Regulatory Commission
Alongside the signing of the law, Babajide Sanwo-Olu also inaugurated the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission (LASERC), the new body responsible for overseeing the electricity market within Lagos State. The commission will regulate electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and pricing within the state.
The newly established commission is expected to provide regulatory oversight that ensures transparency, fair competition, and improved service delivery in the electricity sector. It will also coordinate with private investors, power producers, and distribution companies to strengthen electricity supply in Lagos.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu noted that the commission will play a crucial role in implementing the new electricity law and ensuring that energy reforms deliver tangible benefits for residents, businesses, and industries operating in the state.
Electricity Reform Expected to Boost Lagos Economy
The Lagos State Government believes the Electricity Law 2024 will open the door for greater investment in the power sector, enabling independent power producers and private companies to participate more actively in electricity generation and distribution. Officials say the reform could significantly improve power availability across the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu explained that reliable electricity supply will strengthen Lagos’ position as Nigeria’s economic hub. Improved power infrastructure is expected to support manufacturing, technology, small businesses, and other key sectors that depend heavily on stable electricity.
Economic analysts say the move could mark a turning point in Nigeria’s power sector reform, particularly as other states observe how Lagos implements its electricity law. If successful, the initiative may serve as a model for other regions seeking to take greater control of their energy systems and reduce reliance on the national grid.
