Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has categorically denied speculations suggesting that he is preparing to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) or any other political party. Speaking in a recent interview, the governor assured supporters and residents of the state that he remains fully committed to the PDP and has no intention of switching political allegiance.
“I Am Still in PDP, I’m Going Nowhere,” Governor Lawal Declares
Governor Lawal was firm in his response to growing rumours alleging that he might be defecting to the APC or the newly adopted African Democratic Congress (ADC). “First of all, I’m glad that you said it’s a rumour that APC, ADC, and whatever political parties are calling on me to join their party,” he said. “I am a PDP card-carrying member, and I am still in PDP. I have no intention of going anywhere.”
The governor described the reports as baseless, insisting that his loyalty to the PDP remains unshaken. He emphasized that he has no need to abandon the party that brought him to power and dismissed insinuations that he might be seeking political protection by aligning with the ruling party. “What you heard is a rumour, but I am still in PDP and have no intention of going anywhere for now,” he reiterated.
Opposition No Threat: “I Defeated Them Once, I’ll Defeat Them Again”
Addressing political dynamics within Zamfara State, Governor Lawal took a swipe at opposition figureheads, including former governors Sani Yerima and Bello Matawalle, asserting that their presence poses no threat to his political future. He confidently reminded critics that these same political heavyweights were present during the 2023 elections, yet he emerged victorious despite their influence.
Governor Lawal expressed readiness to face any political challenge in the 2027 elections, maintaining that he has no fear of his rivals. “All the forces in the opposition were there in 2023, but that did not stop me from winning the governorship election. I will defeat them again if the need arises,” he said, exuding confidence in his political standing and the support he enjoys from the people of Zamfara.
PDP’s Internal Crisis: “We’re Working on Solutions”
The Zamfara governor admitted that the PDP is currently grappling with internal issues but assured the public that the party is taking necessary steps to resolve them. He expressed optimism that the challenges facing the PDP will soon be a thing of the past, describing the situation as a temporary setback that is not unusual in political parties.
“There’s no doubt that the PDP is facing some internal crisis, but we are working on resolving that already. It is just a matter of time for the dust to settle,” Lawal said. He called on party members and supporters to remain steadfast and patient, urging them to focus on unity and party cohesion ahead of future elections.
Good Relationship with Tinubu but “Governance Comes First”
Governor Lawal also addressed his relationship with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, clarifying that although they belong to opposing political parties, they maintain a cordial and professional relationship. He noted that governance should take precedence over politics at this time, particularly given the pressing challenges facing the country.
“I have a very good relationship with President Tinubu, but we remain in opposing parties. Right now, I think we should focus on governance rather than politics,” the governor stated. He underscored the importance of delivering on campaign promises and prioritizing the welfare of citizens over premature electioneering.
On 2027 Elections: “Let’s See How Events Unfold”
When asked about his position regarding the 2027 presidential election and whether he would support President Tinubu’s re-election bid, Governor Lawal remained cautious, insisting that it is too early to discuss electoral matters. He stressed that the immediate focus should be on development, security, and governance rather than political calculations.
“There is still time to 2027; we still have two years down the line. So, I don’t think politics should be the main issue right now. Let’s see how events will unfold,” he said. Governor Lawal’s remarks highlight his pragmatic approach to leadership, signalling a commitment to serving the people of Zamfara State above political maneuvering.
