Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove the Commissioner of Police in Kano State following what he described as a disturbing lapse in security planning. The governor said police officers assigned to protect the Independence Day celebrations in Kano were withdrawn at the last minute, leaving the event exposed to potential risks.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf maintained that such action was highly irresponsible and undermined the dignity of Nigeria’s 65th Independence commemoration. He stressed that citizens in Kano deserved consistent protection, especially on days of national significance that attract large gatherings.
Governor Abba Kabir expressed concern that the sudden absence of security personnel could have resulted in severe consequences, arguing that the safety of citizens should never be jeopardized due to negligence or poor decision-making.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Demands Accountability
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf insisted that the Police Commissioner’s decision amounted to a dereliction of duty and called on the presidency to take decisive action. He argued that removing the Commissioner would restore public confidence in security management within the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf emphasized that accountability is crucial in governance, particularly in security matters where lapses can endanger lives. He noted that the role of the police is to protect citizens without compromise, regardless of political or administrative issues.
Governor Abba Kabir assured residents that his administration would continue to engage with federal authorities to guarantee security across the state. He pledged that his government would not tolerate any act capable of undermining peace and public trust.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Calls for Improved Federal–State Collaboration
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf said the Kano incident highlighted the need for stronger collaboration between federal security agencies and state governments. He noted that policing under federal control often creates friction with state authorities, which can weaken response to urgent security needs.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf explained that clearer chains of accountability and closer cooperation would reduce misunderstandings and improve overall security effectiveness. He added that reforms in Nigeria’s security system were necessary to meet the growing demands of modern governance.
Governor Abba Kabir concluded by reaffirming his commitment to working with President Tinubu to prevent a recurrence of such lapses. He stressed that the safety of Kano citizens remained his top priority and urged the federal government to act swiftly.
