Former President Goodluck Jonathan: Denies Claims of Buhari’s Alleged Terrorist Connections

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has firmly denied ever accusing President Muhammadu Buhari of having links with the Boko Haram insurgency. The former Nigerian leader said such reports were misleading and aimed at distorting his record as head of state.

Goodluck Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, rose to power after the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He had previously served as governor of Bayelsa State and vice president of Nigeria, making him one of the few leaders with a rapid rise through different tiers of governance.

Jonathan emphasized that throughout his presidency, his concern was to preserve national unity and security. He insisted that his public statements on terrorism were focused on strengthening the fight against insurgency, not on accusing political opponents.

Goodluck Jonathan Responds to Reports on Boko Haram

Jonathan expressed concern over recent narratives circulating in the media that attributed accusations to him against Buhari. He described the reports as fabrications meant to mislead the public and stir unnecessary political controversy.

Goodluck Jonathan, a trained zoologist who later earned a Ph.D. in Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology, transitioned into politics in the late 1990s. He became widely respected for his calm demeanor and ability to handle tense political situations, traits that helped him navigate Nigeria through the 2015 election.

Jonathan reaffirmed that his administration faced unprecedented security challenges, including the 2014 Chibok girls’ abduction, which drew international attention. Despite criticism, his efforts to involve regional and international partners underscored his belief in cooperative security strategies.

Goodluck Jonathan Reiterates Call for National Unity

Jonathan urged Nigerians to remain cautious about divisive narratives that attempt to pit leaders against each other. He encouraged the public to focus on collective solutions to national challenges rather than political distractions.

Jonathan became globally recognized in 2015 when he conceded defeat to Muhammadu Buhari, marking the first peaceful transfer of power between civilian governments in Nigeria’s history. This singular act elevated him to the status of a respected statesman across Africa and beyond.

Jonathan continues to serve as an international advocate for peace and democracy. He is a regular guest at global forums, mediating in conflicts and supporting democratic transitions in other African nations. He reminded Nigerians that his enduring legacy should be defined by these contributions, not by false accusations.
