Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, has formally announced his intention to contest the 2027 Katsina State governorship election, marking his entry into frontline partisan politics. Daura cited worsening security challenges and what he described as poor governance under the current administration as the major factors motivating his decision to seek the state’s top office.
The announcement, made during an interview with DCL Hausa on Tuesday, has sparked fresh political conversations across Katsina State, given Daura’s long-standing background in national security and intelligence. Although he has largely operated behind the scenes politically, the former DSS chief said circumstances have compelled him to step forward.
Daura also disclosed that consultations on his political ambition have been concluded, adding that he will soon unveil the political party platform on which he intends to contest the 2027 governorship election.
Daura Criticises Katsina Government, Cites Insecurity and Governance Failures
Lawal Daura did not mince words in his assessment of the current Katsina State administration, questioning the competence of the incumbent governor and suggesting that seeking re-election should be based strictly on performance. According to him, leadership is only justified when tangible results are delivered to the people.
“Why do people serve for one or two terms? If they get it right, fine. But if the reverse is the case, then there is no point in seeking re-election,” Daura said, openly declaring that the present government has fallen short of expectations.
He specifically pointed to persistent security challenges in the state, noting that insecurity remains one of the most pressing issues confronting residents. Drawing from his experience as a former intelligence chief, Daura implied that Katsina requires firmer leadership and a more strategic approach to tackling security threats and governance lapses.
‘The Load Is Too Heavy’:Daura Uses Analogy to Justify Leadership Change
Using a vivid analogy, Daura likened the current administration to a fragile bearer struggling under an overwhelming load. He argued that when a leader demonstrates incapacity, it becomes necessary to intervene before irreparable damage is done to the state.
“It is like putting a load on somebody and adjusting it. If he complains that the load is too heavy, you have to take it down to avoid destroying fragile items,” he said. “For the current administration, we can say thank you for your efforts, but you should take a break because you can’t continue.”
The statement is being interpreted by political analysts as a direct challenge to the incumbent governor and a clear signal that the 2027 Katsina governorship contest may be fiercely competitive, especially if Daura leverages his security credentials and public dissatisfaction.
Former DSS Director-General Hints at Party Platform, Political Background
While declining to disclose his party affiliation at this stage, Daura confirmed that all consultations regarding his political platform have been completed and that an official announcement will be made soon. This has fueled speculation across major political parties in Katsina State, with many observers watching closely to see where he will pitch his tent.
Reflecting on his political journey, Daura admitted that he never initially envisioned himself as an electoral contender, despite his long-standing interest in politics. “I admire politics, but I only participated from the background,” he noted, signaling a transition from behind-the-scenes influence to open political leadership.
As the countdown to the 2027 Katsina governorship election begins, Daura’s declaration adds a new dimension to the state’s political landscape, positioning him as a major figure to watch amid growing public debates on security, governance, and leadership capacity.
