Nigeria Federal Government Issues Flood Alert For 13 Northern States As Heavy Rainfalls Loom

The Nigeria Federal Government has issued a flood alert, warning that 13 northern states are at risk of experiencing heavy rainfall and potential flooding between September 13 and 17. In an official statement released on Wednesday, the Ministry of Environment, through its National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Central Hub, has identified 50 communities in the Northern region that may be affected by these impending weather conditions.

Nigerian States on High Flood Alert

Among the states on high flood alert in Nigeria are: Kano (specifically Sumaila and Kunchi), Kebbi (Argungu), Katsina (including Bindawa, Jibia, Kaita, and Katsina itself), Niger (encompassing Kontagora, Mashegu, and New Bussa), Kwara (with Kosubosu in focus), Zamfara (including Kaura Namoda and Shinkafi), and Bauchi (comprising Bajoga, Darazo, Kirfi, Azare, Jama’are, Itas, and Misau).

Flood Preparedness Measures Required

Additionally, Taraba (covering Bali, Donga, Lau, Serti, Mutum-Biyu, and Yorro), Borno (with Briyel, Biu, Dikwa, and Kukawa in the warning), Adamawa (encompassing Ganye, Mubi, Demsa, Jimeta, Mayo Belwa, Numan, Shelleng, and Song), Yobe (including Dapchi, Gashua, Geidam, Kanamma, Machina, and Potiskum), and Gombe (specifically Nafada and Jigawa, along with Dutse, Gumel, Gwaram, and Miga) have been listed by Nigeria Federal Government as regions that need to be vigilant.

Rising Rivers Benue and Niger Pose Flood Threat to Multiple Nigerian States

The agency explained that this flood alert is primarily due to the rising water levels of Rivers Benue and Niger, which could potentially impact nearby communities, extending as far as Bayelsa. Residents in these areas are strongly advised to take precautionary measures in the coming days to ensure their safety and minimize flood-related risks.
