Festus Osifo, President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), has declared that the union will resume its suspended strike if Dangote Refinery or the Ministry of Labour breaches any part of the agreement reached. He stressed that the suspension of the strike was conditional and closely monitored.
Festus Osifo explained that the union would not provide further notice before resuming industrial action if the refinery or authorities fail to honor their commitments. He emphasized that workers have endured hardship and made sacrifices, and therefore expect nothing short of full compliance.
Osifo maintained that trust must be built through transparency and accountability, adding that the welfare of workers remains non-negotiable.
Festus Osifo Reiterates PENGASSAN’s Commitment to Dialogue
Festus Osifo noted that the union values dialogue as the most effective means of resolving industrial disputes. He acknowledged the intervention of the Ministry of Labour in brokering the current truce, but cautioned that words must be matched with action.
Osifo underscored that PENGASSAN would continue to engage in constructive discussions as long as agreements are respected. He, however, reminded stakeholders that the union retains the right to strike should any terms be violated.
Osifo assured members that PENGASSAN remains steadfast in protecting their rights and advancing their welfare, irrespective of pressures from external actors.
Festus Osifo Highlights Workers’ Expectations
Festus Osifo said workers at Dangote Refinery expect the management to fully implement the resolutions agreed upon. He pointed out that employees are not merely demanding wages but also fair treatment, safe working conditions, and job security.
Osifo emphasized that the refinery must demonstrate seriousness by addressing all outstanding issues in good faith. He warned that any attempt to delay or water down the commitments made would only escalate tensions.
Osifo concluded by affirming that PENGASSAN would not hesitate to act decisively in defense of its members if circumstances demand, reminding stakeholders that the suspended strike remains an option on the table.
