The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in achieving its ambitious target of producing 1.4 million barrels per day (bpd). The pledge was made by Heineken Lokpobiri, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), during the 19th Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos on Monday. Lokpobiri described the refinery’s expansion as a transformative step for Africa’s energy independence and industrial growth.
Federal Government Pledges Full Support for Dangote Refinery
The federal government has pledged to help Dangote Refinery overcome all technical, regulatory, and operational challenges as it moves toward full capacity. Lokpobiri emphasized that the administration is committed to creating an enabling environment for private investments in the downstream oil sector, viewing Dangote Refinery as a cornerstone for Nigeria’s energy security.
He noted that the refinery’s success would drastically reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported petroleum products, conserve foreign exchange, and position the country as a net exporter of refined fuel. “We are ready to give every support needed—policy, logistical, and infrastructural—to ensure this refinery becomes a symbol of industrial success not just for Nigeria, but for Africa,” he said.
Dangote Refinery’s Bid to Achieve 1.4 Million BPD Capacity
The Dangote Petroleum Refinery, currently the largest single-train refinery in the world, has set its sights on increasing capacity to 1.4 million bpd. This expansion is part of a broader vision to meet local fuel demand while supplying markets across West and Central Africa.
According to Lokpobiri, recent updates from the refinery’s management indicate steady progress in scaling up operations. The minister hailed Aliko Dangote’s commitment to local value addition and regional energy integration. “What we’re witnessing is industrialization on an African scale—one that will redefine our economic landscape and enhance our competitiveness globally,” he said.
FG Pledges to Help Dangote Refinery Strengthen Africa’s Energy Security
The federal government has pledged to help Dangote Refinery achieve its long-term goals of boosting refining capacity, stabilizing fuel supply, and supporting sustainable energy transitions. The plant’s output, once fully operational, is expected to satisfy domestic consumption while providing export opportunities to neighboring countries.
Lokpobiri also emphasized collaboration between the government, private sector, and regional energy bodies to ensure the refinery operates optimally. “The refinery’s growth aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes industrial development, energy reliability, and private-sector-driven growth,” he added.
The Dangote Refinery’s expansion represents a major milestone in Africa’s industrial story—one that could shift the continent’s position from raw material exporter to refined product powerhouse. With the federal government’s renewed commitment, Nigeria stands on the verge of reclaiming its place as a leader in the global energy market.
