The Federal Government has unveiled a groundbreaking plan to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in volatile farming regions as part of a wider initiative to enhance agricultural security. This project is being jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Defence, marking a strategic fusion of food security and national defense priorities.
The Federal Government is responding to years of violent attacks on farmers, especially in the Middle Belt and Northwest regions, where armed banditry has decimated rural livelihoods. Through this UAV initiative, authorities aim to proactively monitor danger zones, coordinate timely interventions, and reduce the threat levels that have kept many farmers off their lands.
Made-in-Nigeria Drones to Enhance Surveillance and Intelligence
The Federal Government has chosen to deploy Nigerian-made drones, a move that highlights its commitment to local content and technological innovation. These UAVs, developed by engineers under the supervision of NASENI (National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure), come equipped with thermal sensors, night vision capabilities, GPS mapping, and long-range video surveillance.
The Federal Government believes that using domestically engineered technology ensures cost-effectiveness and adaptability to Nigeria’s rugged terrains. In addition to surveillance, these drones can relay real-time intelligence to command centers, allowing faster deployment of security personnel in response to emerging threats.
Pilot Deployment in Benue, Kaduna, and Zamfara States
The Federal Government has identified Benue, Kaduna, and Zamfara states as the first beneficiaries of this drone surveillance program due to their persistent farmer-herder crises. In these high-risk regions, drones will cover wide agricultural zones—up to 1,500 square kilometers per state—to enhance security visibility and rapid threat assessment.
The Federal Government is optimistic that this pilot phase will demonstrate the value of drone intelligence in agricultural defense. Officials have also stated that after reviewing performance metrics, they plan to scale the program to cover other flashpoints in Plateau, Niger, and Taraba states.
Boosting Farmer Confidence and Agricultural Output
The Federal Government is confident that restoring security in farming regions will encourage displaced farmers to return to their lands and resume full-scale cultivation. Through drone surveillance, local farmers will receive early warnings of threats, reducing fatalities and crop losses caused by sudden attacks.
The Federal Government also aims to use this project to reinforce national food production goals. Experts from the Ministry of Agriculture project that stabilized farming activities could result in a 15–20% increase in food output, a much-needed boost in the face of inflation and widespread food insecurity.
Employment and Technological Advancements in Local Drone Industry
The Federal Government is leveraging the drone program as an opportunity to boost local industry and generate employment. Over 5,000 jobs are expected to be created across manufacturing, data analysis, logistics, and UAV maintenance, supporting Nigeria’s growing tech and defense sectors.
The Federal Government is also working closely with tertiary institutions and innovation hubs that contributed to the drone designs. These partnerships have already begun receiving grants for further research and development, helping to solidify Nigeria’s capacity for homegrown technological solutions.
Public-Private Partnerships and Future Expansion Plans
The Federal Government is actively engaging private tech firms, defense contractors, and agricultural cooperatives in a comprehensive public-private partnership (PPP) framework to support drone operations. This ensures long-term sustainability and allows for flexible, on-the-ground responses to security developments.
The Federal Government has further disclosed that it plans to expand the drone network across all six geopolitical zones, complete with regional control centers and AI-enhanced analytics. These future upgrades are aimed at transforming the UAV initiative into a cornerstone of agricultural and national security policy.
