FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Raises Concern Over Voter Apathy
While applauding the peaceful nature of the polls, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike expressed concern over noticeable voter apathy in parts of the Abuja city centre. He observed that turnout in some central urban areas was lower compared to expectations, despite the calm and organized environment. According to the Minister, low participation in city areas may undermine the full representation of residents’ interests.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike urged eligible voters, particularly those residing in metropolitan districts, to recognize the importance of Area Council elections. He explained that local government leadership directly influences infrastructure, healthcare, sanitation, education, and community development initiatives. Active participation, he said, is essential for ensuring responsive governance.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike called for increased civic awareness and voter education campaigns to address disengagement in urban communities. He emphasized that strengthening grassroots democracy requires consistent participation across all parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Commends Strong Turnout in Satellite Communities
In contrast to the city centre, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike highlighted stronger voter turnout in satellite communities such as Karu, Karshi, Kabusa, and Keti. He commended residents in these areas for demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to the democratic process. The Minister noted that participation levels in these communities were encouraging and reflective of their engagement with local governance.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike observed that residents in satellite towns often feel a direct impact of Area Council administration on their daily lives, which may explain their higher turnout. He reiterated that inclusive participation across both urban and suburban areas is necessary for balanced development in Abuja.
FCT Minister Wike reaffirmed his commitment to supporting transparent, credible, and peaceful elections in the FCT. He concluded that sustained civic engagement, combined with orderly conduct, will continue to strengthen democratic institutions within Nigeria’s capital territory.
