Former Rivers State Head of Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, has alleged that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara ordered the bombing of the state House of Assembly complex in 2023. Nwaeke claimed that the attack was aimed at preventing Fubara’s impeachment by lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
During a press briefing on Friday, George Nwaeke stated that he personally witnessed a bag of money being handed over to a former Assembly leader, Edison Ehie, who later became Fubara’s Chief of Staff, to execute the attack. He described the destruction of the Assembly complex as a deliberate act orchestrated by Fubara’s administration.
“I was there when a bag of money was given to Edison Ehie for that operation. Though I do not know the amount inside, I can confirm that the House of Assembly complex on Moscow Road was deliberately brought down under Fubara’s instructions,” Nwaeke alleged.
Further Allegations of State Property Destruction
Beyond the Assembly bombing, George Nwaeke claimed that another attempt was made to demolish the residential quarters of Assembly members. He suggested that this attack was only averted due to a press conference organized by concerned Rivers youths, elders, and National Assembly members, who condemned the move.
According to George Nwaeke, Fubara later expressed regret over failing to destroy the Assembly’s legislative hall before targeting the lawmakers’ quarters. “He personally told me that if he had known earlier, he would have pulled down their hall first before demolishing the residential quarters,” Nwaeke said.
George Nwaeke also raised concerns about Fubara’s leadership style, alleging that the governor had spoken about using Ijaw people to influence Nigeria’s presidency through control of oil pipelines and potential disruptions in the Niger Delta.
Nwaeke Denies Being Forced to Resign
Amid speculation surrounding his resignation, Nwaeke insisted that he stepped down voluntarily and was not pressured to leave office. He dismissed claims that he was sacked or coerced into resigning.
“With the misinformation circulating in print and electronic media, I have chosen to set the record straight. I was not sacked, nor was I pressured to resign; I did it willingly from the depth of my heart,” he clarified.
George Nwaeke stated that his resignation was prompted by his moral discomfort with the alleged illegal activities of Fubara’s administration, particularly the destruction of state assets. He emphasized that he could no longer align himself with the governor’s actions.
Fubara Denies Allegations, Calls Them Baseless
Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dismissed the allegations made by Nwaeke, describing them as “laughable” and calling on Nigerians to disregard them. In a statement released on Friday, Fubara accused Nwaeke of being compromised and spreading falsehoods to discredit him.
“The truth is that Dr. George Nwaeke has been compromised. Whatever he is saying is only aimed at fulfilling his promise to those who may have paid or coerced him to lie against me,” Fubara stated. “I call on all well-meaning Nigerians and the good people of Rivers State to disregard everything said by Dr. Nwaeke, as they are mere desperate attempts to discredit me and my administration and undermine the peace process initiated by Mr. President.”
The suspended governor maintained that he remains committed to the development and stability of Rivers State, vowing not to be distracted by what he described as politically motivated accusations.
Wife Raises Alarm Over George Nwaeke’s Safety
In a dramatic turn of events, Florence Nwaeke, wife of the former Head of Service, has raised concerns over her husband’s whereabouts following his controversial resignation. Speaking to journalists late Friday, she expressed fears for his safety, stating that she had been unable to reach him.
According to her, her last conversation with her husband was when he informed her that he had arrived in Abuja. However, she later saw an online interview attributed to him, which she found suspicious.
“When he got to Abuja, he called that he had landed. I said, ‘Thank God,’” she recounted. “But later, I saw an online interview, and I said, ‘That is not my husband.’”
She revealed that she sent him multiple messages asking if he was under duress or had been kidnapped. “I sent him a message: ‘Are you under duress? Have they kidnapped you? Talk to me now. Why are you not responding?’”
Her concerns have sparked widespread speculation about the circumstances surrounding Nwaeke’s statements and his resignation, adding another layer of intrigue to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
The allegations made by Dr. George Nwaeke against Governor Siminalayi Fubara have intensified political tensions in Rivers State. While Nwaeke insists he has firsthand evidence of Fubara’s involvement in the Assembly bombing, the governor has strongly denied the accusations. Meanwhile, concerns over Nwaeke’s safety and his wife’s distress call have further deepened the controversy. As the situation unfolds, Nigerians and the people of Rivers State await further clarifications and possible investigations into the claims.
