Ogunyemi Challenges Sowunmi’s Eligibility in Election Dispute

Lanre Ogunyemi, an experienced state legislator serving two terms and a former secretary of the APC in Lagos, challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of Sowunmi as the winner. Ogunyemi’s contention was based on the argument that Sowunmi, the respondent, lacked proper endorsement and eligibility to participate in the elections as a Labour Party candidate for Ojo Federal Constituency.

In its ruling addressing the petition, the tribunal concurred with the petitioner’s argument that the Labour Party’s candidate did not meet the qualifications required to compete in the elections. Consequently, Sowunmi’s garnered votes were considered null and void. This decision led the tribunal to conclude that the second runner-up, Lanre Ogunyemi of the APC, should rightfully have been declared the winner of the Ojo Federal Constituency race.
