In a significant operation conducted on Monday, January 22, 2024, the Uyo Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) successfully apprehended 24 suspected internet fraudsters undergoing training in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The arrests were made at a storey building believed to be a notorious hub for grooming individuals in cybercriminal activities.
Sting Operation in Two Locations
The operation, meticulously planned and intelligence-driven, unfolded at D-Line Ewet Housing Estate and Nelson Mandela area, both situated in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The suspects, all males, were found in the upper floor of the building resembling a classroom, equipped with chairs, tables, laptops, and notepads—a setup designed exclusively for training youths in various aspects of cyber criminality.
Seizure of Assets and Tools
During the raid, law enforcement recovered a cache of items that link the suspects to cyber-related activities. Notably, five exotic cars, 18 laptops, 17 mobile phones, and an internet router were confiscated from the premises and the individuals. These findings further underscore the gravity of the criminal operation being conducted in the seemingly innocuous building.
Repeat Offenders
This is not the first time the EFCC has cracked down on such illicit activities in the region. On November 28, 2019, the commission arrested 23 trainers and trainees at a “Yahoo Academy” located on Essien Essien Street, Ikot Ibiok village in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. The recurrence of such incidents highlights the persistent challenge authorities face in curbing cybercrime and the need for continued vigilance.
