EFCC Charges Alaba Alakija and Oyinkansola Alakija for Alleged Forgery

In a recent development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken legal action against a lawyer, Alaba Alakija, and his father-in-law, Alaba Alakija, over alleged forgery. The duo appeared before the Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, facing an amended two-count charge related to conspiracy and the use of false documents.

According to a statement by the EFCC’s head of Media & Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the defendants purportedly conspired to employ a false document titled “Vesting Deed by Dr. Omodele Alakija and Mr. Afolabi Alakija,” aiming to benefit financially from a property situated at No.10, Keffi Street, South-west, Ikoyi, Lagos. The purported offense dates back to August 6th, 2015, raising eyebrows over the authenticity of the document and the alleged intentions behind its fabrication.

The arraignment before Justice Mojisola Dada saw both defendants enter pleas of “not guilty,” setting the stage for further legal proceedings. As the prosecution sought a trial date and the remand of the defendants, counsels representing the accused sprung into action. Yemi Akangbe, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, representing the first defendant, swiftly presented a bail application on behalf of his client, emphasizing the need for leniency.

Meanwhile, Victor Giwa, counsel to the second defendant, sought to orally present a similar application, citing extenuating circumstances such as the defendant’s role as a nursing mother to a two-month-old infant. However, an unexpected revelation emerged during the proceedings, challenging the accuracy of the baby’s age, as disclosed by the second defendant’s husband.

In a courtroom imbued with tension and intrigue, Justice Dada deliberated on the bail applications, balancing the presumption of innocence with the gravity of the charges. Ultimately, the first defendant secured bail in the sum of N10 million, with stringent conditions including the submission of international passports by sureties. Simultaneously, the court seized the passport of the second defendant, awaiting resolution of the legal intricacies surrounding her bail.

While the defense argued for the bail’s necessity, highlighting familial responsibilities and legal obligations, the prosecution remained vigilant, emphasizing the severity of the alleged offenses. The judicial decision to grant bail reflects the nuanced nature of legal proceedings, where individual circumstances intersect with broader considerations of justice and equity.

As the dust settles on the preliminary legal skirmish, attention turns towards the impending trial slated for May 28, 2024. The courtroom drama witnessed during the bail hearing foreshadows the intensity and complexity that await both the defendants and the prosecution. With the specter of forgery and conspiracy looming large, the trial promises to unravel layers of intrigue surrounding the disputed document and the motives driving its creation. As the legal battle unfolds, stakeholders await with bated breath, cognizant of the far-reaching implications of the case on the integrity of legal processes and the pursuit of justice. May 28th marks a pivotal juncture in this unfolding saga, where truth and accountability intersect amidst the hallowed halls of justice.

Next Steps by EFCC and Adjournment

Justice Dada adjourned the trial to May 28, 2024, for commencement, marking a significant step forward in the legal proceedings. As the case unfolds, further insights into the alleged forgery and conspiracy are expected to come to light, shedding more clarity on the matter. The legal battle, which began with the arraignment before the Special Offences Court, underscores the EFCC’s commitment to combating financial crimes and upholding the integrity of legal processes. As the defendants prepare their defense and the prosecution gathers evidence, the outcome of the trial remains eagerly anticipated by both parties involved and the public at large.
