EFCC Arrests 59 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Abuja

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intensified its fight against cybercrime with the arrest of 59 suspected internet fraudsters in Abuja. The operation, carried out by operatives of the EFCC’s Abuja Zonal Directorate, took place on Monday, February 24, 2025, at the Abacha Road, Mararaba axis of Nasarawa State.

According to a statement from the anti-graft agency, the arrests were made following credible intelligence linking the suspects to various fraudulent internet activities. The agency stated that the raid was part of its broader efforts to curb the rising cases of cyber fraud, which have continued to pose serious economic and security threats in the country.

Seized Items and Evidence Against the Suspects

During the operation, EFCC operatives recovered 73 mobile phones of different brands from the arrested individuals. These devices are believed to have been used to perpetrate fraudulent activities, including romance scams, identity theft, and phishing schemes targeting unsuspecting victims within and outside Nigeria.

Preliminary investigations suggest that some of the suspects had been using social media and digital platforms to lure victims into financial scams. The EFCC has assured the public that forensic analysis will be conducted on the seized devices to gather more evidence before legal proceedings commence.

Nasarawa State: A Growing Hub for Cybercrime?

The choice of Mararaba, a densely populated area on the outskirts of Abuja, as a hotspot for cybercrime activities has raised concerns among law enforcement authorities. Over the years, Mararaba has gained a reputation for harboring cybercrime syndicates, with many young individuals engaging in fraudulent online schemes due to economic hardship and peer influence.

Speaking on the development, an EFCC official noted that the agency has been monitoring the activities of internet fraudsters in the area for months. “We have received several reports about illegal activities in Mararaba, and this operation is part of our commitment to sanitizing the area,” the official stated.

The EFCC has assured that the arrested suspects will face legal action as soon as investigations are concluded. Under Nigerian law, internet fraud, also known as cybercrime, is a serious offense punishable by imprisonment, fines, or both. The agency has vowed to ensure that those found guilty are prosecuted in accordance with the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015.

Legal analysts have emphasized the importance of swift prosecution to deter other potential fraudsters. They argue that while arrests are crucial, ensuring timely and successful convictions is the key to reducing cybercrime in Nigeria.

EFCC’s Commitment to Fighting Cybercrime

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has reiterated its dedication to combating internet fraud across the country. In recent years, the commission has conducted multiple sting operations leading to the arrest and prosecution of suspected cybercriminals. This latest operation in Abuja is part of the commission’s broader nationwide crackdown on financial crimes.

The agency has also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities. Citizens have been encouraged to protect their personal information online and avoid engaging in transactions with unknown individuals. As cybercrime continues to evolve, the EFCC has promised to strengthen its intelligence-gathering efforts and employ advanced technology to track down perpetrators.

With the arrest of these 59 suspects, the EFCC has once again demonstrated its resolve in tackling internet fraud in Nigeria. However, stakeholders believe that a combination of law enforcement, public awareness, and economic reforms will be necessary to address the root causes of cybercrime in the country.
