EFCC Arrests 24 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Benin City

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Benin Zonal Directorate, announced the arrest of 24 suspected internet fraudsters in a major crackdown on cybercrime activities in Benin City. The operation took place on Monday, September 30, 2024, following credible intelligence linking the suspects to computer-related fraud.

According to the EFCC, the arrests were made across several locations in Benin City, targeting individuals involved in various forms of internet fraud. The swift and coordinated operation was part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to combat the rising wave of cybercrime across Nigeria. The EFCC reiterated its commitment to ensuring that fraudsters are brought to justice and the integrity of Nigeria’s digital space is preserved.

Items Recovered from the Suspects

During the operation, the EFCC recovered a variety of high-value items believed to be proceeds of the illicit activities. Among the items seized were 11 exotic cars, which included luxury brands commonly associated with wealth and prestige. In addition to the vehicles, several laptops and mobile phones were confiscated, as these are often the primary tools used by fraudsters to perpetrate cybercrimes.

A cash sum of N160,000.00 (One Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira) was also found in possession of one of the suspects, further adding to the evidence against them. The EFCC emphasized that the confiscation of these items is crucial in disrupting the operational networks of these fraudsters and preventing them from continuing their illegal activities.

Suspects to Face Prosecution After Investigation

The 24 suspects are currently in custody and have reportedly made useful statements to the EFCC investigators. The anti-graft agency revealed that comprehensive investigations are ongoing, and once completed, the suspects will be charged to court. The EFCC expressed confidence in building a solid case against the alleged fraudsters, stressing that they will face the full wrath of the law.

This latest operation by the EFCC highlights its relentless efforts to curb the rising trend of internet fraud in Nigeria. The commission continues to call on the public to provide timely information that can assist in tracking down cybercriminals, reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance towards financial crimes.

EFCC Chairman Calls for Renewed Commitment in Corruption Fight

As Nigeria commemorates its 64th Independence Anniversary, the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has urged Nigerians to embrace a renewed commitment to tackling corruption. In an address delivered in Abuja on October 1, 2024, Olukoyede aligned the anti-corruption fight with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing the pivotal role of every citizen in the battle against financial and economic crimes.

In his Independence Day message, the EFCC chairman reinforced the commission’s unwavering stance against corruption. He stressed that collective efforts and collaboration between Nigerians and the EFCC are essential for the country’s progress and development. “At the EFCC, we are resolute in our fight against corruption in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. As we celebrate our 64th Independence, let us forge ahead in pursuit of reform, progress, and enduring development,” Olukoyede said.

A Vision for a Corruption-Free Nigeria

Olukoyede expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential to lead the global stage and overcome the menace of corruption. He emphasized that the nation’s progress lies not just in governmental reforms but in the passion and drive of its citizens to uphold integrity. “We can make Nigeria greater. We can rule the world. We can conquer corruption!” he declared, reflecting his belief that a united front can bring about significant transformation.

The EFCC Chairman’s call comes at a critical juncture as Nigeria faces economic challenges and rising concerns about governance transparency. His message underscores the need for a societal shift toward zero tolerance for corruption, aligning with the government’s broader vision of reform and sustainable development under Tinubu’s administration.
