According to the EFCC, their diligent efforts in curbing this illicit practice have resulted in the apprehension of no fewer than 80 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining. These suspects were found in possession of truckloads of assorted minerals, highlighting the extent of the problem.

“It is alarming the rate at which the resources of the state are being plundered by artisan/illegal miners,” remarked a concerned official. He emphasized that if these valuable resources were properly harnessed and channeled through legitimate means, they have the potential to sustain the state’s economy and transform it into a self-reliant entity.

Kwara State boasts an abundance of mineral deposits, scattered across its 16 Local Government Areas. Properly managed, these resources have the capacity to turn the state into a thriving hub, often likened to a “small London.”
