The state of Kwara is facing a growing challenge in the form of illegal mining activities, which has prompted concerted efforts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to combat this menace. The gravity of the situation was recently brought to light by intelligence reports, which exposed the operation of illegal mining sites scattered across the state.
According to the EFCC, their diligent efforts in curbing this illicit practice have resulted in the apprehension of no fewer than 80 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining. These suspects were found in possession of truckloads of assorted minerals, highlighting the extent of the problem.
“It is alarming the rate at which the resources of the state are being plundered by artisan/illegal miners,” remarked a concerned official. He emphasized that if these valuable resources were properly harnessed and channeled through legitimate means, they have the potential to sustain the state’s economy and transform it into a self-reliant entity.
Rich in Mineral Deposits
Kwara State boasts an abundance of mineral deposits, scattered across its 16 Local Government Areas. Properly managed, these resources have the capacity to turn the state into a thriving hub, often likened to a “small London.”
The fight against corruption, particularly in the realm of illegal mining, demands the active support and collaboration of all stakeholders. The state’s commitment to addressing this issue is reflected in the appointment of a commissioner dedicated to solid minerals development, a move lauded for its potential to positively impact the sector.
Kwara state government’s commitment to combat illegal mining was reaffirmed during a visit by the EFCC. The government pledged to collaborate closely with the EFCC in their joint efforts to curb the unauthorized extraction of natural minerals within the state’s borders.
EFCC Gets Kwara State Supports
The commissioner responsible for solid minerals development acknowledged the EFCC’s prior commitments to addressing this issue, expressing his awareness of their efforts even before assuming his current role. He emphasized the need for continued vigilance in sanitizing the state of corruption and called for increased collaboration and synergy among government agencies, particularly within the ongoing anti-corruption campaign.
The battle against illegal mining in Kwara State highlights the importance of safeguarding the state’s natural resources while ensuring that they are utilized for the greater good. By taking a proactive stance against this illicit activity, Kwara aims to protect its valuable assets and harness their potential to fuel economic growth and development in the region. The success of this endeavor depends on the collective commitment of all stakeholders, working together to combat corruption and secure a brighter future for Kwara.
