DSP Barau Jibrin Declares Fearlessness: “I’m Not Scared of Trump — Nigeria Is a Sovereign Nation”

Deputy Senate President (DSP), Senator Barau Jibrin, has issued a firm and unapologetic response to United States President Donald Trump, stating that he is not intimidated by the ex-American leader. Speaking during a parliamentary engagement, Jibrin emphasized that Nigeria remains a sovereign nation with democratically elected representatives who will never allow misinformation or false narratives from any foreign individual to go unchallenged. His remarks came after Trump made comments which Nigerian lawmakers deemed misleading about Nigeria’s political development and international posture.

According to Barau Jibrin, foreign figures — irrespective of their status — do not have the right to malign Nigeria or speak falsely about its internal affairs. He reiterated that being a Nigerian parliamentarian gives him both the authority and responsibility to defend the dignity of his nation on any platform. “I’m not scared of Trump. I can say my mind. I’m Nigerian, Nigeria is a sovereign nation. I am a parliamentarian, and he is saying lies about our country,” he declared confidently before the Senate plenary.

His statement immediately drew applause from fellow lawmakers who praised his boldness and clarity. Political analysts note that Jibrin’s response signals a shift in Nigeria’s diplomatic language, reflecting a growing refusal among Nigerian leaders to be silent when the country is painted inaccurately by external voices. The Deputy Senate President insisted that Nigeria must always stand tall and demand equal respect in the global community.

Senate Emphasizes National Pride and Diplomatic Equality

Senator Jibrin insisted that Nigeria’s sovereignty is not up for debate and cautioned foreign leaders against careless commentary that undermines the nation’s dignity. He stressed that Nigeria engages in diplomacy from a position of strength — not submission — and that the country deserves respect as Africa’s largest democracy, biggest economy, and a central player in regional peace and security. For him, international relations must be conducted on the basis of mutual respect, not political arrogance.

The DSP highlighted that Nigeria’s role on the world stage is not defined by foreign perceptions but by its own constitutional order and diplomatic engagements. He reminded Nigerians that every country, regardless of global influence, must recognize Nigeria’s autonomy and right to self-determination. “Nigeria is not a playground for misinformation,” he added, underscoring that the Senate will always challenge any attempt to malign the country for political gain abroad.

Lawmakers across party lines reportedly expressed alignment with Jibrin’s position, agreeing that the time has come for Nigeria to speak more assertively in international matters. They argued that silence in the face of misrepresentation would suggest weakness, and Nigeria must show that its political institutions are capable of defending the nation diplomatically and ideologically.

Nigeria Reasserts Its Global Reputation Amid Rising Foreign Scrutiny

Barau Jibrin’s remarks come at a period when Nigeria has faced increased scrutiny from foreign analysts and politicians regarding governance, security, and economic reforms. The DSP maintained that while constructive criticism is welcome, false narratives and inflammatory rhetoric will not be tolerated. He reminded Nigerians that no single foreign politician has the authority to redefine Nigeria’s image without facing rebuttal from its elected officials.

The Senate leadership affirmed that protecting the country’s international reputation is not just a governmental responsibility but a national duty. Jibrin noted that when Nigeria is misrepresented on foreign platforms, it affects diplomacy, foreign investment, and the perception of Nigerian citizens living abroad. Therefore, defending the nation against false claims is a matter of national interest and global positioning.

Senator Barau concluded by reaffirming that Nigeria’s democracy is strong, its parliamentary system is functional, and its independence is absolute. He urged Nigerians to remain confident in the nation’s progress, stating that Nigeria will continue to engage with world powers through diplomacy, but never through submission or fear. His final remarks echoed through the chamber:
“Nigeria is sovereign. No one — not even Trump — will define us.”
