CAN Condemns Title of Ini Edo’s Film “A Very Dirty Christmas,” Calls It Offensive to Christian Faith

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly criticised the title of actress Ini Edo’s film, A Very Dirty Christmas, describing it as offensive and disrespectful to the Christian faith. According to CAN, the use of such wording in reference to Christmas undermines the sacred meaning of the season, which Christians worldwide regard as a period of holiness, love, and spiritual reflection.

In a statement released by the association, CAN noted that Christmas represents the birth of Jesus Christ and should not be portrayed in a manner that suggests immorality or moral decay. The group expressed concern that the title alone, regardless of the movie’s storyline, sends the wrong message to the public and could negatively influence societal values, especially among young people.

CAN therefore called on relevant regulatory authorities, including film and broadcasting regulators, to review the title and take appropriate action. The association urged filmmakers and content creators to exercise sensitivity and respect when handling themes connected to religious beliefs, stressing that creative freedom should not come at the expense of faith and cultural values.

A Very Dirty Christmas”: CAN Urges Regulators to Review Ini Edo’s Movie Title

The Christian Association of Nigeria has raised alarm over the title of Ini Edo’s film, A Very Dirty Christmas, saying it trivialises and insults the essence of Christmas. CAN argued that attaching the word “dirty” to a sacred Christian celebration is inappropriate and capable of provoking religious tension in a multi-faith society like Nigeria.

The association explained that while it does not oppose creativity in the entertainment industry, there must be a balance between artistic expression and respect for religious symbols. CAN stated that many Christians feel hurt by the title, which they believe portrays Christmas in a negative and degrading light, contrary to its spiritual significance.

As a result, CAN has appealed to regulatory bodies such as the National Film and Video Censors Board to assess the movie’s title and determine whether it aligns with acceptable standards. The group also called on filmmakers to engage religious and cultural stakeholders when producing content that touches on sensitive beliefs.

CAN Says Ini Edo’s Movie Title Disrespects Christmas, Demands Official Review

The Christian Association of Nigeria has criticised the title of Ini Edo’s film, A Very Dirty Christmas, stating that it disrespects the sanctity of Christmas and offends Christian sensibilities. Christian Association of Nigeria maintained that Christmas is a holy season centred on peace, purity, and the celebration of Christ’s birth, making the title unacceptable in its view.

According to the association, the entertainment industry has a powerful influence on public perception and moral standards. CAN warned that titles and content that appear to mock or diminish religious values could deepen moral decline and create unnecessary controversy within society.

Christian Association of Nigeria has therefore called on appropriate regulatory authorities to step in and review the film’s title, urging that corrective measures be taken if necessary. The association also advised actors, producers, and filmmakers to be mindful of Nigeria’s religious diversity and to promote unity and respect through their creative works.
