US Involvement in Burkina Faso’s Counter-Terrorism Efforts

The United States’ active role in supporting counter-terrorism efforts across various African regions is no secret, and Burkina Faso is no exception. In the face of rising terrorist threats, the U.S. has been providing crucial assistance to Burkina Faso’s security forces. As terrorist attacks surged in 2021 compared to the previous year, Burkina Faso found itself ranked as the fourth-most affected country globally by the Global Terrorism Index, following Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia.

The primary terrorist organizations contributing to the instability in Burkina Faso are JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin), ISIS-GS (Islamic State in Greater Sahara), and the locally rooted Ansaroul Islam. The Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project reported a staggering 597 security incidents in Burkina Faso in 2021, resulting in 1,073 fatalities and displacing an estimated 1.6 million people internally. These incidents encompassed a range of violence, including armed attacks, abductions, carjackings, improvised explosive device (IED) attacks, vehicle-borne IEDs, rocket attacks, and ambushes. The most affected regions include Sahel, Nord, Centre-Nord, and Est.

Horrific 2021 Terrorist Incidents in Burkina Faso

Burkina Faso witnessed a series of devastating terrorist incidents throughout 2021, affecting various segments of its population. Defense and security forces, civilians, humanitarian workers, religious, political, traditional, and community figures all fell victim to the relentless wave of attacks. One tragic event unfolded on May 3 when armed militants attacked the village of Kodyel in the eastern Komandjari province, resulting in the death of at least 30 people, with 20 more wounded and homes set ablaze.

Another horrifying incident occurred on June 5 in the Solhan Commune, Yagha province, where gunmen stormed the area, killing 160 people, including 20 children. The toll included both civilians and security forces. On August 18, ISIS-GS-affiliated groups attacked a civilian convoy escorted by Defense and Security Forces and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland in the Sahel region, resulting in the deaths of 30 civilians, 14 gendarmes, and three volunteers.

As the year unfolded, JNIM militants targeted the gendarmerie detachment at Inata on November 14, leading to the tragic deaths of 57 people, including 54 gendarmes. This incident triggered widespread protests across Burkina Faso, highlighting the growing frustration with authorities’ perceived failure to address the persistent conflict. The year concluded on a somber note as Islamist insurgents attacked a convoy in the Centre Nord region on December 23, claiming the lives of approximately 41 people, including a national icon in the fight against terrorism. These distressing events underscore the urgent need for sustained international support, including the assistance provided by the United States, to address the escalating threat of terrorism in Burkina Faso.
