Buhari: Ibrahim Babangida Pays Tribute to ‘Brother, Friend and Patriot’

MINNA, NIGER STATE — Former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd), has paid a deeply personal and emotional tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as more than a colleague — a brother, a friend, and a lifelong patriot whose presence loomed large over Nigeria’s post-independence history.

In a personally signed statement issued from his Hilltop residence in Minna, Babangida expressed profound sorrow over the passing of his former comrade-in-arms. “Our paths crossed in 1962 when we both joined the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna,” he wrote. “From those early days, Muhammadu stood out — quiet yet resolute, principled yet humble, deeply patriotic, and fiercely loyal to Nigeria.”

Babangida emphasized that their relationship transcended professional military camaraderie. It was a bond forged in the crucible of war, statecraft, and shared national purpose. “We shared not only years of training and service but also deep values of discipline, sacrifice, and nation-building,” he added.

A Life of Service, Discipline and Integrity

Reflecting on their shared experiences, Babangida recalled the numerous trials and transitions they both navigated across their military and political careers. While they governed at different times and under distinct historical circumstances, Babangida said Buhari remained unwavering in his core values.

“In the course of our long careers, fate placed both of us in leadership at different times and under very different circumstances. But in all, Buhari remained consistent in his belief in integrity, order, and the dignity of public office,” he said.

According to IBB, Buhari embodied a brand of leadership that placed the country above self. “He was a man of faith who carried himself with humility and whose character remained unshaken even in the face of criticism or political adversity,” the statement read. “His legacy is not measured only by his policies, but by the moral example he tried to set.”

Shared History, Occasional Differences, Enduring Respect

While acknowledging that their journey was not without disagreements, Babangida stressed that mutual respect and national interest always prevailed between them. “We may not have agreed on everything — as brothers often don’t — but I never once doubted his sincerity or his patriotism,” he stated.

He described Buhari’s passing as symbolic of a generational shift — a closing chapter in Nigeria’s post-independence military-political elite. “His passing today is not just the loss of a former head of state or a two-term civilian president. It is the loss of a symbol — a man whose life embodied the transition of Nigeria from the old guard to the new republic,” Babangida noted.

IBB emphasized that while Buhari’s formal political role may have ended, his presence endured as a moral compass. “Even in retirement, Buhari remained admired for his modesty and his example in public life,” he said.

Condolences to the Buhari Family and the Nation

Extending his sympathies to the Buhari family and the Nigerian nation, Babangida conveyed deep condolences and prayers for divine comfort and reward for the late leader’s service.

“To his beloved wife Aisha, his children, grandchildren, and the nation he loved and served, I extend my deepest condolences,” Babangida wrote. “May Allah (SWT) forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”

Babangida’s tribute stands out not just for its political relevance, but for the emotional weight carried in his words — a reminder that behind the veil of national leadership are personal bonds, shared burdens, and a mutual love for a nation both men sought to serve in war and peace.

An End of an Era in Nigeria’s Political-Military History

With the death of President Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria has lost not just a former military and civilian head of state but also one of the last surviving members of a foundational generation of military officers who shaped the country’s post-colonial political landscape.

For Babangida, Buhari’s death marks “the end of an era” — a period in which service, sacrifice, and national duty were the defining ethos of leadership. Their relationship, often examined under the lens of power and rivalry, was ultimately bound by a shared commitment to Nigeria’s survival and progress.

As tributes pour in from across the nation and the world, Babangida’s words serve as a poignant reflection on friendship, duty, and the passing of a generation that, for better or worse, shaped the destiny of the Nigerian state.
