Biden’s Impeachment: In a display of good-natured humor, President Joe Biden addressed the recent impeachment inquiry launched by Republicans, suggesting that they might be on a quest to close down the government. Speaking at a campaign event in McLean, Virginia, just a day after House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reluctantly succumbed to pressure from the right-wing faction of his party and announced the inquiry, Biden couldn’t help but chuckle.
Biden on Impeachment and the Looming Government Shutdown
“I don’t quite know why, but they were determined to impeach me,” Biden quipped. “And now, from what I can gather, they want to impeach me because they want to shut down the government.”
The clock is ticking, though, as without an agreement on new funding by September 30th, the federal government faces the possibility of at least a partial shutdown. The hard-right Republicans are pushing for spending cuts in some areas and increases in others, with a particular focus on immigration enforcement.
Republicans Demand Biden’s Impeachment Inquiry
Interestingly, some Republicans have made launching a Biden’s Impeachment inquiry a condition for supporting the government’s continued operation. This inquiry revolves around the business affairs of President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and unverified allegations of corruption linked to Joe Biden.
Earlier this week, Speaker Kevin McCarthy made headlines when he directed House Republicans to initiate a Biden’s Impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden, citing a “culture of corruption” surrounding the President and his family. It’s worth noting that these allegations had failed to gain substantial evidence during the nine months of investigation by the GOP-led committee.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s Reluctant Stance on Biden’s Impeachment Amid GOP Pressures
McCarthy had been hinting at the possibility of Biden’s Impeachment for weeks, but he finally made the announcement on Tuesday, driven by mounting pressure from hard-line GOP members. These hard-liners threatened to remove him from his position if he didn’t follow through with an impeachment attempt.
With just a slim five-seat majority in the House to maintain, McCarthy found himself in a tough spot, influenced by these pressures. Given that more than five Republicans expressed doubts about the necessity of Biden’s Impeachment at this time. The speaker opted to skip a vote on whether to initiate the inquiry.
McCarthy’s Approach to Impeachment Draws Comparisons to Pelosi’s Strategy During Trump Era
This move seemed reminiscent of Nancy Pelosi, his Democratic predecessor, who did not call for a House vote before launching proceedings against Donald Trump in 2019. However, it also left McCarthy vulnerable to accusations of hypocrisy, especially since he had previously criticized Pelosi and even assured right-wing news outlets that he would hold such a vote.
Nancy Pelosi herself weighed in on the situation, telling MSNBC on Thursday, “Don’t blame it on me. Just take responsibility for what you were doing there, and don’t misrepresent the care that we took, the respect that we had for the institution to go forward in a way that really addressed the high crimes and misdemeanors of Donald Trump.” Amid the political drama, humor seems to be one tool President Biden isn’t afraid to wield.
