Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially disbursed ₦2.7 billion to more than 10,000 vulnerable households across Lagos State as part of his administration’s ongoing social intervention and poverty alleviation initiative. The move, announced during a high-level ceremony in Ikeja, underscores the government’s renewed commitment to protecting residents from the harsh effects of economic hardship, inflation, and subsidy removal. Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the program aims to directly cushion the cost-of-living pressure facing thousands of Lagosians in low-income communities.
Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the beneficiaries were carefully selected through a transparent process involving community leaders, local government officials, and verified social registers. He described the ₦2.7 billion disbursement as a “lifeline for hardworking but struggling Lagosians” who have been disproportionately affected by recent national economic reforms. The intervention, he said, is part of a broader strategic plan to achieve sustainable economic inclusion and ensure that no resident is left behind.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed that this initiative complements ongoing state programs such as the Eko Cares Scheme, the Conditional Cash Transfer, and the Food Security Distribution Drive. These interventions collectively form the state’s social protection blueprint, designed to uplift vulnerable groups including widows, persons with disabilities, market women, artisans, and the elderly.
Sanwo-Olu: Prioritizing Welfare, Food Security, and Economic Empowerment
Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the ₦2.7 billion disbursement is part of his administration’s multi-layered poverty reduction framework, which aligns with the T.H.E.M.E.S+ development agenda. He stressed that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial capital, bears a unique responsibility to ensure that rapid economic growth translates into tangible benefits for the people. According to him, direct cash support and livelihood grants remain vital in maintaining social balance amid rising food and transportation costs.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that Lagos State’s welfare strategy goes beyond one-time financial assistance. The government is also implementing skill acquisition programs, vocational training, and microcredit opportunities through agencies such as the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) and the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment. These initiatives, he said, are targeted at building long-term resilience among vulnerable households while stimulating the informal economy.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed that food security and welfare are top priorities of his government. Through partnerships with private organizations and international development agencies, Lagos is scaling up its food bank operations and ensuring that essential goods reach every corner of the state. The ₦2.7 billion intervention, he noted, demonstrates that the Lagos government is not only addressing short-term hardship but also investing in lasting human capital development.
Sanwo-Olu: Transparency, Accountability, and Hope for Lagos Families
Governor Sanwo-Olu assured Lagosians that transparency remains central to every stage of the disbursement process. He confirmed that all beneficiaries are being captured in the Lagos State Social Register (LSSR), ensuring traceability and preventing duplication or political favoritism. He further announced that independent monitoring teams and civil society observers will continue to verify the authenticity of payouts to guarantee fairness and integrity.
Governor Sanwo-Olu also commended the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, the Ministry of Finance, and the Office of Civic Engagement for their roles in ensuring accountability. He reiterated that every naira of the ₦2.7 billion fund is traceable and is being used solely for the purpose of improving lives. According to him, the program represents the government’s moral and constitutional duty to protect the most vulnerable citizens during tough economic times.
Governor Sanwo-Olu ended his remarks with a call for unity and hope among Lagos residents. He urged beneficiaries to use the funds wisely and pledged that more rounds of financial and welfare support would follow as part of the state’s social sustainability roadmap. The ₦2.7 billion disbursement, he said, reaffirms that Lagos remains a government of inclusion, compassion, and progress — a city determined to lift every family out of poverty.
