Atiku Abubakar Insists on Open Presidential Contest in ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared that no aspirant will be compelled to withdraw from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential race ahead of the 2027 general elections, reaffirming his position that the party will conduct an open and competitive selection process. The statement comes amid growing political maneuvering and reports of pressure on Atiku to step aside for a southern aspirant as part of zoning considerations.

In a statement issued by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, Atiku maintained that all qualified aspirants would be given equal opportunity to present themselves freely once the ADC formally commences its internal processes. He also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to weaken opposition parties through intimidation and political pressure.

Commitment to Internal Democracy

Atiku stressed that the ADC remains committed to democratic principles, particularly in the selection of its presidential flagbearer. According to him, the party will not impose candidates or orchestrate withdrawals, but will instead allow aspirants to test their popularity and acceptability through established party mechanisms.

He argued that internal democracy is essential to building a credible alternative to the ruling party, adding that any attempt to sideline aspirants through pressure or backroom arrangements would undermine the confidence of party members and the electorate at large.

Rejection of Pressure to Step Aside

The former vice-president’s comments followed reports suggesting that he was under pressure to withdraw from the race in favour of a southern candidate, in line with ongoing debates around power rotation. Atiku did not directly address zoning, but made it clear that personal or regional pressure would not determine the ADC’s choice of candidate.

He emphasized that competence, national appeal, and the will of party members should guide the process, rather than external influence or political intimidation. He also warned that such pressure tactics could destabilize the opposition and weaken democratic competition.

Accusations Against the Ruling Party

Atiku further accused the APC of deliberately targeting opposition figures in an attempt to fragment and weaken rival parties ahead of the 2027 elections. He described these actions as part of a broader strategy to stifle dissent and reduce political competition.

According to the statement, the ADC and other opposition parties must remain vigilant and united in the face of such challenges, insisting that a strong opposition is vital for Nigeria’s democratic health and accountability.
