At Argungu Fishing Festival, Tinubu Vows To Crush Bandits And Terrorists

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to defeat banditry and insurgency across Nigeria, declaring that the battle against insecurity “will be won.” Speaking at the 61st Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival in Kebbi State, the President Tinubu linked the revival of the iconic cultural event to what he described as renewed stability in the region and across the country.

Addressing thousands of participants and spectators at the historic festival, Tinubu said the relative peace now being witnessed in parts of the North-West is the outcome of sustained security investments, intelligence coordination, and collaboration between federal and state authorities. President Tinubu assured Nigerians that his government remains committed to restoring lasting peace nationwide.

President Tinubu Renewed Commitment to National Security

President Tinubu reiterated that the fight against insecurity remains a central pillar of his administration’s agenda. He commended security personnel for their sacrifices, noting that men and women in uniform continue to risk their lives to protect the nation’s sovereignty and maintain peace.

According to him, the improved security climate in Kebbi State and other parts of the country is not accidental but the result of deliberate and coordinated efforts among the federal government, state governments, and security agencies. He emphasised that community engagement and intelligence gathering have played vital roles in recent successes.

The President Tinubu further assured farmers, fishermen, traders, and families that his administration is determined to create an atmosphere where citizens can pursue their livelihoods without fear. He described the successful hosting of the festival as tangible proof of returning normalcy.

Culture, Unity and Economic Development

Tinubu described the 61st edition of the festival as a powerful symbol of unity, resilience, and peaceful coexistence. He noted that for more than eight decades, the event has endured as a cultural and economic landmark, projecting Nigeria’s heritage positively to the global community.

He praised the Kebbi State Government for the organisation and security arrangements that ensured a safe and vibrant celebration, describing the event as evidence of purposeful and inclusive leadership. “A socio-cultural event like this can only thrive where the security atmosphere is conducive,” he said.

The President Tinubu pledged sustained federal support for tourism, agriculture, food security, and rural development. He acknowledged Kebbi State’s contribution to national food production and assured that collaborative efforts would continue to strengthen farmers and fishermen, positioning the state as a model for agricultural success.

Royal Endorsement and Festival Highlights

The Emir of Argungu, Sama’ila Muhammad Mera, welcomed the President Tinubu and described his presence as a profound affirmation of national unity, reconciliation, and peace. The monarch recalled that the ancient waters of Matan Fada had only recently regained their vibrancy after nearly six years of hiatus due to insecurity.

He praised the administration’s initiatives in healthcare, infrastructure, and youth empowerment, highlighting projects such as the student loan fund programme and expanded access to primary healthcare services. The Emir also acknowledged ongoing federal infrastructure projects linking Kebbi to broader economic corridors.

The four-day festival attracted more than 50,000 fishermen from Nigeria and neighbouring countries. Abubakar Usman from Maiyama Local Government Area emerged overall winner with a 59kg catch, receiving N1 million and two brand-new cars. Other top contestants were rewarded with cash prizes, vehicles, a Hajj seat, and motorcycles. The winning fish were presented to President Tinubu as souvenirs.

Prior to attending the festival, the President Tinubu inaugurated several projects in Birnin Kebbi, including the Bola Tinubu Secretariat Complex, a modern motor park, road infrastructure, and health and education facilities—projects aimed at strengthening public service delivery and regional development.
