APC Dismisses Opposition Alliance as No Cause for Concern

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar as inconsequential, asserting that it poses no threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Reacting to speculations that the meeting signaled an impending opposition coalition, APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, described the gathering as a “meeting of indolent politicians” and maintained that the party remains focused on governance and upcoming elections.

“We don’t react to other people’s acts as a political party. We only do our own things. Presently, our plate is full. We are personally concentrating on how to win and bring Anambra on board for the APC. We also have a responsibility to run the government,” Basiru stated.

Obasanjo-Atiku Meeting Fuels Speculation of Opposition Coalition

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led a delegation of political heavyweights, including former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Cross River State Governor Liyel Imoke, to a private meeting with Obasanjo at his Abeokuta residence.

Though details of the meeting remain undisclosed, sources close to the discussion suggested that it was geared towards strategizing for the 2027 general election. When asked whether the meeting was linked to his presidential ambition, Atiku denied any political motives, saying, “I am here on a courtesy call.”

However, an insider revealed that discussions revolved around uniting opposition forces to “salvage the country ahead of 2027.” This has fueled speculation that the opposition could be working toward a grand alliance to challenge the APC in the next election.

APC Unfazed, Focuses on Anambra Election and Governance

Despite mounting speculations, the APC has remained dismissive of the potential opposition coalition. Basiru insisted that the ruling party is neither threatened nor distracted by the meeting, emphasizing that the APC remains united and focused on governance.

“How can people who are in disarray be a threat to a solid political party like the APC? We are talking about a party that is not embedded in any crisis and has high-caliber people who can win elections. So, we are not worried,” he said.

The APC secretary stressed that the party’s immediate priority is winning the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State. He assured party supporters that President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” remains on track, and the government is working diligently to deliver on its promises.

Opposition Divided on Coalition Talks

While some opposition figures advocate for a coalition, divisions remain within their ranks. Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed openness to alliances but cautioned that he would only support efforts that prioritize national interest over mere power acquisition.

“While we appreciate the efforts of various stakeholders, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, in promoting national unity and progress, our participation in any coalition would depend on its alignment with our values and vision for a better Nigeria,” Obi’s media aide, Ibrahim Umar, stated.

However, the LP leadership contradicted Obi’s stance, clarifying that no formal coalition discussions were underway. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, said, “Labour Party has no agenda for a coalition. Even if we are going to do it, it is not going to be a unilateral decision.”

NNPP and Others Weigh Coalition Prospects

The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has indicated a willingness to explore alliances, particularly if led by respected figures like Obasanjo. NNPP spokesman, Ladipo Johnson, emphasized the importance of building a coalition with like-minded individuals committed to national progress.

“We are open to any meaningful coalition that would bring hope to Nigerians. By God’s Grace, we will have like-minded people in the same team. That is what building a coalition is about, and Obasanjo is a patriot and revered elder statesman,” Johnson stated.

While discussions around opposition unity continue, the APC remains firm in its stance that Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 is not under threat. With a divided opposition and internal disagreements on coalition strategies, the road to 2027 remains uncertain for Nigeria’s political landscape.
