The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly dismissed former Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola’s declaration that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will unseat the ruling party at both federal and state levels in the 2027 elections.
In a statement released on Sunday, APC spokesman Seye Oladejo described Aregbesola’s remarks as nothing more than “an empty boast” and criticized the former governor for turning against the party that had shaped his political career.
APC Accuses Aregbesola of Betrayal
According to Oladejo, Aregbesola’s comments were self-destructive and undermined his own legacy rather than damaging the APC. He reminded Nigerians that the former governor had risen through the political ranks under the APC platform, benefiting from positions as Lagos Commissioner, Osun Governor, and later, Minister of Interior.
“From Lagos Commissioner to Osun Governor and then Minister, Aregbe ate, dined, and thrived on the APC table. Today, in a desperate bid for relevance, he is busy setting fire to the same house that made him. That, dear Nigerians, is political suicide of the highest order,” Oladejo said.
The All Progressives Congress spokesman further noted that every attack on the ruling party amounted to an erasure of Aregbesola’s own political record, comparing it to “a man writing his autobiography with an eraser.” He stressed that Nigerians were too discerning to be swayed by what he termed “a self-destructive messenger.”
APC Questions ADC’s Electoral Strength
Beyond targeting Aregbesola’s criticisms, the Lagos APC also dismissed the electoral viability of the ADC. Oladejo described the opposition party as a “political mirage,” citing its poor showing in recent by-elections as evidence of its weakness.
“The woeful and embarrassing performance of the ADC in the recent by-elections should give them no cause for hope. They need to first learn to be humble before they inevitably bite the dust in 2027,” Oladejo said.
He argued that Lagosians and Nigerians at large would not be swayed by “soundbites” or “fairy tales” but would vote based on performance. According to him, APC’s achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and governance reforms provided a visible record of delivery that could not be matched by opposition rhetoric.
ADC’s Growing Coalition
Despite APC’s criticism, Aregbesola has continued to push forward with ADC’s grassroots mobilisation efforts. His declaration came during an event where Moshood Salvador, leader of the Labour Party’s Conscience Forum, formally joined the ADC along with his members. The ceremony was attended by ADC leaders across Lagos’ 20 local government areas and 37 LCDAs.
Observers note that ADC has grown significantly since an opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar adopted the party as a platform to challenge All Progressives Congress. However, the ruling party insists that such alignments will not unsettle its dominance in 2027.
Oladejo concluded by reiterating All Progressives Congress’s confidence in victory, saying: “In 2027, Lagosians and Nigerians will once again choose consistency over confusion, credibility over contradictions, and competence over comedy.”
